Motivating the classroom is a very effective way to get student's excited about learning. School itself can be very time consuming and boring. Getting student's motivated by simply engaging with them about your personal success within your industry can excite them. It's exciting starting a new chapter of your life. Many of our student's will start a new chapter of their lives upon graduation by entering their field of study. Throughout the process of teaching and instructing it's our duty as professionals to motivate our students.
By being a motivated instructor, we can help students stay motivated and help be their support by continuing to acknowledge their growth and progress in the course.
I plan on using the three components for student motivation; reinforcement, retention, and transference. Also, continuing to practice semantic, and episodic memory teaching with students.
By first building strong relationships, we as instructors can encourage students to be more open and this gives them a more fulfilling educational experience. Keeping your lessons relevent and engaging can help student retention because they can actually see themselves in that job. Addresseing challenges early on can help you connect with your students in a way that keeps them interested. We are in the position to guide them through their careers and this helps student retention.
This module on motivating students has helped me understand the importance of creating an engaging learning environment that encourages students to take ownership of their education. Strategies like fostering a growth mindset, positive reinforcement, and setting clear goals will motivate students. I intend to apply these strategies by creating opportunities for students to feel successful, helping them overcome challenges with a positive outlook, and ensuring that the learning objectives are clear and achievable. I’ll also be mindful of tailoring my approach to each student’s needs, ensuring they are supported and encouraged.
Learn what drives your students. Students want to learn material that will help them reach the goals that they've set. Be a motivating instructor. Find what kind of positive reinforcement your students respond to and go with it. Retention is important, and finding ways to help your students retain the information provided will help them transfer what they know to the field. Never ridicule a student or be combative with their answers, questions, or comments. Students that begin to feel unable to speak without being ridiculed will shut down and rarely do well in the class.
i think (at least in teaching the trades) one of the best ways to find some common ground with students is to show them some small "tricks" for making jobs both better quality and more efficient.
I believe motivation is KEY to student retention and key to not burning yourself out!
A big thing for me that came from this lesson is to make sure that the students will understand how what they are learning will be used in their future careers or endeavors. When I look back at my schooling, I don't recall a lot of practical application, but learning things to complete a project or graded assignment. I remember back to even in high school, when I first started losing interest in one of my previously favorite subjects: math. Taking an advanced class in elementary functions I started struggling a bit. Before then I did math for fun, but this started being more difficult, so I asked the instructor how we will ever apply this stuff? Why are we learning this? What does it accomplish? I have never forgotten his response. He go very flustered, as he had no real answer, and after stuttering and stammering, he blurted out, "For the aesthetics!" I thought, "that's it?" And from then on I struggled even more, and never really proceeded further in any advanced math. Looking back on it, I always thought of what a crime that was for an instructor to crush me like that. I hope never to do that, so I always want to give students a real goal of applying what they are learning.
The module has reflected the importance of movtivating the student to make them successful. The important aspect is to have an open learning environment (so student can thrive in learning), do not intimate students, and have a transend the message of learning. I have to concentrate on not making student be in a negative environment and must reboost my enthusiasum.
Although I may have a student(s) who knows more about the subject than I do, my experience on the subject matter will keep them intrigued.
How to properly motivate students.
I've learned that motivation has multiple steps to it, and each of those steps needs to be attended to with students. Students also need me to focus on the WHY behind their objectives and assignments, be clear and communicate well, and engage both types of memory to build their learning scaffold.
Relating to the students with your experiences can be very helpful. Also understanding their perspectives will be invaluable toward student success.
Motivating students through enthusiasm, positive feedback, and an open learning environment is essential for their success. encouraging engagement, avoiding intimidation, and appreciating their efforts fosters understanding and progress.
Being able to relate course content to real world/working examples will help with student retention.
I want to focus on motivating my students by putting emphasis on the future possibilities for they can achieve for themselves, family, etc. I want to make the content relatable to my students through my personal expertise along side using their individual expertise to encourage them.
Encouraging students to be engaged in the classroom setting by showing them that the nursing field is exciting. Also making sure that students are able to put the pieces together and critically think.
This module has demonstrated the importance of motivating students to be successful. Showing students their instructor not has subject matter, but is equally excited about sharing this and their own personal experiences. A motivated instructor will have knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm for the course material.
We have to show up enthused to teach to help foster and enthused learning environment.
