There are many challenges in the e-learning environment that instructors and students can face. We need to keep records of conversations. We need to handle behavioral problems by identifying their learner profile and go about the best resolution. Be proactive and remind students that there are help and resources if they need them.
There are many different types of personalities that we will see from the students and there are appropriate ways to handle communicating with each type.
It is more difficult and time consuming to individualize and customize instructor-student interaction in the asynchronous environment.
Key points I have learned about behavior management are broken down to five categories (noisy learner, quiet learner, disruptive learner, intimidators, and procrastinators) that are easier to identify when dealing with students personalities and behavioral traits. This module helped facilitate ways to learn about these behaviors such as the noisy learner may be regarded as borderline disruptive but it is important for educators to identify this and catch it early on by setting boundaries. What I found very interesting was the difference between the interdependent and interactive learner. Both a dominate force that actually creates competition that may fuel the discussion but as for the instructor to be very attentive to conflict. To conclude; oppositions that may effect students outcomes are contributed to attrition management or competing responsibilities.
I learned that a way one might identify a student who is a procrastinator is by paying attention to their online presence. Students with excessive technical difficulties may be using these as excuses to gain additional time to complete their work.
I have learned that the main means of communication with students in the e-mail, but the information must be carried in an organized manner. In addition, queries whether by mail or by chat must be saved to leave a record with the student. I also learned about the different types of behavior and how to deal with each one so as not to create conflicts in the course between the students and the teacher. It is also necessary to know how to resolve conflicts that arise so that they do not reach other levels unnecessarily. It is important to talk with students who do not participate or do not attend synchronous sessions to avoid dissertation in the course.
The recognizion of the different types of learners is helpful in e-learning environment as well.
Really taking the time to remind students and follow up with them so that they feel included and stay on track is a must when e- learning! Responses with a 24 hour period, as the educator, is necessary to make the student still feel your presence and that they are still the priority in an e-learning environment.
This module presented helpful information on ways to minimize student attrition, offering counseling to students who need support and guidance.
Learned ways to counteract discussion disruptors and other personality traits that could hinder discussions.
Students are all different and will be different types of learners. Keeping an eye on what type of learners everyone is and making sure everyone is getting what they need out of the material is pertinent to their success. Making sure there are no bad behaviors being presented in online learning, especially in synchronous settings is key.
Records management is important when it comes to online learning. As the instructor, you must be organized so that if the time comes up where you need to present communication documentation, it will be easily obtainable.
Comment on Rose Elam's post: I agree Rose. Communicating with your students can be an effective solution to understand where they're coming from. Maybe they're dealing with a personal issue that has resulted in their rebellion towards their program. It's important to listen on what they have to say in order to find a solution to their issue.
There are challenges to e learning for both the instructor and students and in both cases strategies must be used to organize information and files, stay on task and stay committed to learning. Educators must help their students to stay on task and work in this environment to avoid attrition.
I have learned that almost everyone is using email nowadays and a great tool
As an instructor, it is my role to do as much as possible to help to student be successful.
It is important to adapt to different ways of utilizing E-learning.
The module provided us with quick overview on different types of students, and issues we can face in on-line class. Keeping this information in mind will help me manage different student types more effectively.
A lot of different topics of learning mentioned in this course there are many different personality of students that we have to deal with. Keeping courses record and resolving student conflicts and many more !
I learned students may fall into a category type. It is important to identify them and address any issues they are creating either with themselves or in the class by making contact with them or using school policy to solve the issue. The detailed record keeping portion was good as far as making sure you have a well organized system for capturing, storing, and organizing communications.
