Students feel comfortable when they can relate to the instructor. Giving them your biography as well as asking them to post theirs is a great way to become familiar with the online student.

I have learned that students are as much involved academically as the instructor. With an instructor who is very much engaged in the progress of the students work, this will encourage the student to be involved as well.
