In order to be effective as an online instructor, effective communication is utilized to address all types of learners. Noisy learners, disruptive, procrastinators, etc. can be addressed with specific strategies and methods. Conflicts can arise and need to be identified and ameliorated by the instructor. To avoid attrition, instructors must be able to identify issues such as work load, family issues, etc. They can avoid student attrition by offering incremental support and feedback to students.
Keeping students on tack and on point is important. If a student want to test the systems have a little chat with them to remind them of the guidlines
I learned that although not in a traditional class, some of the same issues are there.
I learned different ways that students can disrupt a learning environment and effective ways to manage it. It is really important to understand the rules and regulations of the organization and to ensure that your actions reflect those guidelines.
I learned about behaviors can be distruptive to learning through an online course. I also learned strategies on how to identify students that may be struggling or need extra assistance with an online course.
Reply to Lisa Herrera's post:This is something I think about often while teaching 9-12 students. I have 140 students total, and have not committed to daily, individualized contacts. I do offer office hours, Google Meets, 1:1 chat sessions, and reply to emails in a timely manner.
I learned the importance of managing the e-learning environment.
I have gained new insigt on how Learners may exit an e-learning program prematurely, for a number of reasons:
- They feel alienated.
- The workload is too heavy.
- Competing responsibilities.
- Technical issues.
As an online facilitator I can take some measures to reduce attrition.
This module provided tips for handling challenges and managing conflict. It is best to always know your institution's policies and remind stuents of them when there are challenges of students who push the envelope/
Something that I learned during this module is the idea to have a specific area to post questions that opens up responses by fellow classmates. This does two very important things; first is that when a student is able to help another student, it will reinforce learning and demonstrate that they student has learned a specific objective. Secondly, it will take the load off the instructor having to respond to so many individual emails.
Have set rules and guideline and follow them. Make sure they understand them also, but also let them talk about issues to you is also critical. Treat them kindly will go a long way.
Resolving the many issues that can lead to attrition is essential. Learning about each students communication style can help the instructor pin point potential problems right out of the gate. Helping all students to understand the expectations and following through with maintaining those boundaries creates more space for learning.
Many of these topics relate as well to face-to-face classes. The human element is a huge factor in all classes.
Efficient online classroom management is critical for the success of an online, async, environment. It is important that students feel validated and that there is equal room for learning and growth. What I found to be interesting was the section on disruptive learners; thankfully, I've never experienced this but it is good to know what resources and methods there are to mitigate this risk.
It is critical to harness the unique behavioral qualities and advantages that each student brings to a course in support of collective learning outcomes. This suggests that different students should receive a different style of engagement and play a unique role in the learning experience.
Record keeping will be a big part of the online class. Document everything, just as in the traditional classroom. Being new to the online environment, I was surprised that students may try to commandeer the class or be rude and aggressive in their posts. I need to study my district's online policy before beginning any online courses.
I learned that it is very important to be organized and have a system for keeping up with student assignments, discussions, etc.
It is also important to be aware of the differnt types of learners and how to effectively handle each one.
I learned about the various types of students who will become difficult in the online classroom setting and how to best help them learn and not disrupt other students.
I learned that communication is imperative to provide an e learning enivornment for the student. Feed back and counseling if needed is are necessary to make a student successful.
There will be some students who may have obstacles or challenges when taking an online course. This module is about the different problems students could face while taking classes online and how we can help smooth these challenges. I agree excessive assignments or giving students too much can be a problem. I also believe in keeping the students on top of things and helping them not to procrastinate.
