One of the biggest challenges for me is learning student's names. Our classes are only 3 weeks long and the class size can vary from 8 or 10 students to nearly 30. With the smaller class sizes, it's obviously not as difficult but my most recent class had 21 students and it took me all of the three weeks to remember all of them. Another challenge is having to stay motivated while teaching material I don't feel proficient at. Anything electrical has always been a problem for me so teaching it is very difficult. I'm not one to back down from a challenge though, and now that I have taught several classes on the subject I can feel my confidence growing. I still don't like it, though.
It's important to build a fun learning environment for the students, so you can choose to be silly for a few minutes to get students to have fun.
Make it an enjoyable experience introduce comradery, competition, engage your students. Share your experiences, life stories and let them tell their stories learn their names.
.
Students at all levels need to be heard and have their needs met. Bringing in personal anecdotes from the instructors' past will
allow students to understand concepts in a meaningful way. Each day should start on a positive note to enhance the learning process.
I like to get to know the students and build a relationship with them. Feel the vibe in my room and see what type of learning skills I need to address and just make things fun 🤩 and exciting for them .
That you never know what a student is really going through being open and genuine to each, and every single one can really set the tone of the classroom stage
Knowing how to support and encourage the students to succeed
Celebrate and recognize success. Provide positive feedback- add a positive spin to assignment feedback especially when the work isn't great. Preserve student motivation. Show how the coursework applies to future professional endeavors.
Boring teachers make boring classes. When I've had teachers that just stand and read the book for the entire class I just wanted to sleep or even go into class. It felt like a waste of time. But teachers who taught with excitement keeps your attention. Telling stories of when I was in the field will make the student listen closer because it's a real-life situation and they may have the same experience. Its like walking by an old man and you overhear him talking about his time in a war fought long ago. It makes you want to stop and listen because he was there. Not some history book professor that leaned about it in college. Someone who experienced it and puts the emotion behind it. It just makes our minds excited to gain the knowledge.
Enthusiasm to to the subject will increase student investment.
I've learned to be enthusiastic about what I am facilitating to reflect a positive learning environment.
My main take away was to have some fun and show enthusiasm for the subject. As the instructor you set the tone for the class and starting with a little light-hearted joke or talking about a little-known holiday is a good ice breaker and helps build a rapport with the students. Of course, the most important part is taking the time to show the respect of getting to know the students, that they matter to you and that you want them to succeed.
Be confident as possible when speaking and any time when learning a new subject to ask random questions all the way through the day so whether or not they know the subject they are hearing it through the day in class
In this topic I've learned we must set realistic expectations for the students, when teaching or discussing new topics, we must stay within the basics; too much information leads to confusion or jumping into another topic.
I'll present the material thoroughly, have an open discussion for all students to participate in. Use that as an opportunity to engage more and use any methods necessary to promote learning.
Being positive and building a rapport with students will help facilitate a good learning environment. A interactive and positive learning environment where students are excited about learning is one way to keep student retention.
Be passionate about the subject matter and keep it real to the program, real to the industry especially when it comes to safety. Explain what is needed in order to get through the program and the importance of it. But at the same time let them understand that you will not know all of it. Have fun with the material from time to time. Do not overwhelm with every detail
Motivation is created with enthusiasm for the class which becomes contagious, influencing the room and engaging your students. If we add a little fun in the mix the environment becomes favorable for learning and potentially easy to recall the knowledge learned.
I learned that is vitally important to set clear expectations, hold students accountable with high expectations but also realistic expectations. Lastly, I learned establishing a good rapport with students sets the tone for the course or daily interaction.
I learned in this module that its important to have different strageties for students when learning. Also to be confident and enjoy the learning so the students can learn the material.
The class will react heavily to how the instructor presents themselves or the information. And remember to keep the human aspect involved to show the class that you are human as well.
