pay attention and be creative.   The more you create an environment that holds their attention the more room there is for retention.  Ask questions look people in the eyes and make sure they have an understanding.

It's important to have a lesson plan but prepared to deviate, because often times students can throw a monkey wrench into the mix.

By setting expectations for yourself daily will help reflect upon the students as they learn bell to bell.

Engaging student participation along with the instructor showing interest and enthusiasm helps to encourage promising outcomes within the student population.

An instructor's enthusiasm about the course will carry over to the students, and help all be more comfortable in the learning environment.

Make it fun and engaging.

My enthusiasm for the subject makes a great difference in the students enthusiasm

Starting the class with some lighthearted moments allows the students to get settled into the class and helps me to get a feel for students that day.

Implementing General Strategies for Student Retention is important because it helps students to succeed in the classroom and in the field.

Be real, make it fun, show you want to be there. Connect

That helping my student set the correct expectations to meet their academic goals, will help them be successful.

I learned the importance of connecting with students to make content fun , interesting and to involve all students in learning process.

From this module, I’ve learned how important it is to understand the unique needs and motivations of adult learners. Adults enter educational programs with specific goals, real-life experience, and a strong desire for learning that connects directly to their personal or professional growth. They value relevance, respect, and practical application. As an instructor, recognizing these characteristics allows me to create lessons that feel meaningful and empowering rather than rigid or disconnected.

I have learned that student retention is strengthened by creating a supportive and engaging learning environment that meets diverse needs. I’ve discovered the importance of designing personal learning experiences and encouraging goal setting, which fosters motivation, achievement, and long-term success.

By setting the expectations high, we are showing students the examples of competency levels required for advancement within a career field. In which will gain respect from students as everything is relevant to their success.

You are like a musician at a concert....you CANNOT have a bad day.  I know that sounds harsh.  Yet, you have to be able to pragmatically separate things when you teach.  It has become the most difficult thing for me in 25+ years of higher ed...but, I believe it to be true.  The classroom is NOT your therapy session.  You are there to help students...it is NOT about you.

One thing that has stood out to me in this module is the importance of incorporating fun into the classroom, and setting the tone for your classroom. This isn't something I have given much thought about up to this point, except for the obvious creating a positive environment, but this is definitely something that I would like to try to incorporate into my classroom.

I have learned how instructor enthusiasm can inspire students to acheive their best. I also learned how using humor at the beginning of each class can set the tone for the day. I plan to integrate this into my courses going forward!
