I learned what needs to be in a syllabus.
Planning and preparation are essential to success in the classroom. It provides the instructor with the confidence to deliver course material effectively. It also demonstrates professionalism to the students.
To always come and be prepared for the day. If you have a lay out of what the expectations look like in the class it will set the tone for everyone else in the classroom. Creating and having courses, objectives, a proper syllabus explaining what to expect and what to know.
Be prepared with a plan and a checklist and prioritize what needs to be done.
Having a check list keeps your prepared and organized. It will establish good habits so nothing is missed.
It's not just about the syllabus and objective, but class culture/learning environment. Students want to know what kind of teach they have and part of that comes from the environment.
Planning ahead and using check lists can improve confidence and performance in class. This allows instructors to take time to connect with students and improving learning outcomes.
Show up 1/2 hour early to class to prepare the classroom for instructional needs and greet the students. Keep a notepad handy to jot down notes and ideas.
preparation perpetuates the perception of professionalism
Preparation is the key, syllabus to outline course content learning objectives and outcomes is a must. Check lists are handy to review that you have covered all of your bases in your educational endeavor.
Comment on Tikeama Buckingham's post: I don't like writing things down. This one is going to be hard to do. I do see the importance of it and I am going to give it my best to keep a small note pad with me and write things down.
Effective Teaching Strategies: Planning and Preparation
Planning and preparation are foundational to delivering effective instruction. What I’ve learned is that thoughtful planning involves more than just outlining content; it requires anticipating student needs, setting clear objectives, and organizing lessons in a way that fosters engagement and active participation. Preparation also includes staying up-to-date on the latest educational technologies and resources to create an interactive and dynamic learning environment.
I intend to apply this by ensuring that each lesson is designed with clear learning outcomes in mind and is adaptable to different learning styles. I will incorporate a variety of teaching methods, such as case studies, simulations, and collaborative projects, to make lessons both engaging and practical. Regular self-evaluation and student feedback will be key in continuously improving my planning and preparation strategies. Additionally, I plan to allocate time for reflective preparation, which includes reviewing and refining previous lessons based on student performance and feedback, ensuring that each class builds upon a solid foundation of preparation and is tailored to meet the needs of my students.
As a new instructor. I liked the recommendation to have a notepad available at all times. It is easy to have a plan and try to stick with a plan but things come up, and it's hard to remember all details. Having a notepad can allow me to continue with what was planned but to quickly jot down a reminder to go back over something later. No matter how prepared we think we are, especially as a new instructor, we are likely to forgot things and things might not turn out how we thought, so we can learn from these things and it can help with future preparation.
Be prepared throughout the duration of the class.
The importance of preparing early and thoroughly was well articulated. I specifically liked the idea of coming to class 30-minutes early to prepare and personally greet the students as they arrive. This sets a professional learning atmosphere.
While a thorough plan is critical, you also need to know where you're at at a glance. The importance of a checklist stood out as something very important to be successful.
Preparation prior to class is important to the students knowing what is expected from them as well as from the instructor.
We need to always be learning as well to stay current on our course knowledge. We need to make the classroom an inviting space to encourage students in their learning. It is a good habit to make a checklist to make sure you don't forget something important.
It helped me understand the syllabus from an instructors point of view.
Comment on Justin Markle's post: The first day is its own entity. it places the foundation of what to expect. the remainder will smoothly flow if you set it up.
