Diagnostic, Formative and Summative Assessment | Origin: EL106

This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Evaluating Student Learning in Online Courses -->  Diagnostic, Formative and Summative Assessment

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

I learned that diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments each serve a distinct purpose, and when they’re used together intentionally, they create a complete picture of student learning rather than just a final score.  These assessments help identify students’ prior knowledge, strengths, and gaps before instruction begins.   I realized how powerful they are for preventing learning struggles instead of reacting to them later.  This module emphasized that formative assessment is not a single event, it’s an ongoing process.   Tools like exit tickets, questioning strategies, and quick checks allow teachers to adjust instruction in real time.  Summative assessment Summative assessments measure mastery at the end of a unit or course.  What stood out to me is that they are most meaningful when they align tightly with learning goals and when students understand the criteria ahead of time.  The module showed how these three types work together: diagnostic tells you where to start, formative guides the journey, and summative shows where students end up.
Use diagnostic checks at the start of units I plan to use short pre‑assessments or concept inventories to tailor instruction from day one.  Embed formative assessment throughout lessons I’ll incorporate exit tickets, quick quizzes, and observation protocols to adjust pacing and provide targeted support.  Align summative tasks with learning goals I intend to design end‑of‑unit assessments that clearly reflect the skills and knowledge students practiced along the way.  Sharing rubrics and success criteria early will help students understand expectations and take ownership of their learning.  Use assessment data intentionally I’ll analyze patterns from all three assessment types to guide reteaching, differentiation, and enrichment.

Summative assessments are a fantastic tool to assess the students learning at the end of a project or course. Be able to determine what students know & what they do not know.

What is summative assessment?
I learned that a summative assessment is an assessment that is conducted at a particular point in time, occurring at the conclusion of a lesson, project, unit, or course to determine what students know and what they do not know. I learned that it is important for formative assessment to be ongoing because student learning is ongoing.

From this module, I learned that effective assessment in online learning depends on using the right technology tools for the right purpose. Tools such as online quizzes and tests, digital portfolios, virtual labs and simulations, WebQuests, and Track Changes each serve different roles in measuring student learning and providing feedback.

I also learned the importance of matching assessment types to learning outcomes and understanding whether an assessment is knowledge-based, performance-based, portfolio-based, or project-based. This helps ensure that students are being evaluated in meaningful and appropriate ways, rather than relying on one type of tool for all learning goals.

In my practice, I intend to apply this by being more intentional in selecting assessment technologies that align with course objectives and by incorporating a mix of formative and summative assessments. I also plan to use tools like Track Changes and digital feedback methods to provide clearer, more timely responses to students so they can improve throughout the learning process.

Different types of assessments achieve different results. Diagnostic assessments identify where a student is starting from and done before instruction. Formative assessments should be ongoing and can help show whether students are understanding what was taught. Summative assessments are used at the end of units to demonstrate competency.

Using formative assessments more often such as exit tickets. Reminded me about using think, pair, share again. Feedback is essential to effective learning.

Bloom's Revised Taxonomy - Plan to verbally incorporate into applicable courses (and could replace old documents, once approved).

Teaching students the levels of questioning is beneficial because it helps them learn to identify the type of information they need to provide to answer questions. I have found that when students know the different levels of questions and the key words associated with them, they are much more successful at answering them.

In online learning environments, diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments are essential for monitoring progress, enhancing engagement, and ensuring achievement of learning objectives. Diagnostic assessment prepares the foundation, formative assessment supports continuous improvement, and summative assessment evaluates overall performance. When strategically applied through digital tools and feedback mechanisms, these assessments create an effective, interactive, and learner-centered online education experience.

I allowed my students during yesterdays evolution to perform formative assessments on each other and think it went well for some students to hear both positive and negative feedback from other students

From this module I learned  the importance of using diagnostic, formative and summative assessment together to support student' learning throughout the entire instructional process.

I intend to apply this knowledge by intentionally incorporating all three types of assessment into my teaching process

I like the analogy that the writer used, formative assessment is like building a house, and summative is when the house is complete.

Comment on Angel Martinez's- Much of this information seems straight forward, however there are people that would stiil not feel confuden

This was helpful to take a closer look at different assessment methods.

The Blooms Revised Taxonomy was new to me and I plan to use it in the future. Pulls together a lot of what I was doing to assess students, in ways that will also stimulate me to think more creatively about how to assess my students.

Pre and post tests can be your best friend as it offers students the ability to see what they learned.

If students are given diagnostic pre-assessments, it helps the instructor obtains information about their students. It gives the instructor prior knowledge, skills, and/or misconceptions before the course begins or before a learning activity.
