I learnt to engage my students to the class, I should build early connections, use interactive content, encourage active participation, facilitate meaningful discussion, and give regular feedback.
Provide feedback in a timely manner.
Make sure your feed back builds confidence with your students.
I learned that student engagement and content management are two major components of online success.
Make sure to set up a email response to be in constant communication with students come up with activities to promote participation in shy students
Small groups for some discussions to encourage participation from those students that may feel overwhelmed or outdone by chatty students
Be mindful of class sizes
Engagement is key to success in online learning platforms. Knowing the different type of learners can aid in tailoring to students without changing course content.
Its important to have a one one with your students to establish feedback with your students
The importance to have discussion post to gather feedback from students
I am a bit embarrassed that, because I have never taught an online class before, it had not occurred to me that I will need to do asynchronous classes due to the variation of location and availability of the students. I recall my history with online learning the philosophy was if we wanted to learn it, we would figure out how to be available when we were told to be available and everyone was to participate in a synchronous class setting.
This module helped me consider ways to better engage students in the asynchronous classroom. I consider if breaking the glass up into small groups to engage in the discussions would be beneficial, and even possible. I do feel I need to do a better job using techniques such as bold colors and Emojis to help convey what I cannot otherwise through nonverbal communication.
It was nice to learn about the advantages and disadvantages for synchronous and asynchronous discussions. Instructors should allow their students to provide feedback about what they're learning and be open to suggestions.
It's helpful to use synchronous discussion with individual students
I thought it was interesting to learn about asynchronous discussions as well as learning about constructive feedback in student posts/comments.
It was really interesting to see the different kind of learners. I am more of a competitive learner and fast typer so I would dominate synchronous learning. It was great to get a better understanding so I could provide a fair and engaging environment for all of my students.
To ensure clear communication and avoid misunderstandings, I should use visual cues like color, bolding, and smiley faces in my responses.
There are advantages and disadvantages for synchronous and asynchronous discussions. As instructors we are obliged to search and to apply the proper discussion format that best promotes learning. After all, the primary goal of teaching is to enable students to learn their subjects in the best manner possible.
Was interesting to hear challenges of synchronous learning when that is the more traditional approach.
For my class discussions, I use asynchronous discussion boards and also have hold video sessions with all my students. I wasn't aware that instructors used synchronous text chat rooms to have discussions. I can see how there are many disadvantages to this approach.
It seems an odd concept that major learning topics should not be presented in synchronous discussions. This is how it is often done in an in-person class. I do understand giving students the study materials in advance of discussions. I am still pondering this topic.
