When teaching in an interactive learning environment, it is important to show yourself as present in all aspects of the course. Students must see you commenting often, and know that you are working to enhance their online learning environment. You also have to make sure to be timely and structured in the way that the environment is managed. In other words, student grades should be updated regularly, and students should have an idea of what is currently happening, what is happening next and what the overall goal of each module of the class is. You have to make decisions based on how you would like to run the class that will potentially limit the access that some students will have to course material. Lastly, to keep students engaged, they need to be stimulated with appropriate media options that allow them to interact with what they are learning rather than just gain information from lecture.
I thought the list of topics you need to ask your employer as an online instructor were very helpful, like the turnaround times for student inquiries, deadline for submitting final grades, and policies governing plagiarism.
Reply to Gina Barton's post:I agree with you, that was something that stuck out for me also!
Most of what was presetnted I was already familiar with but it was reassuringn to know that the blackboard system that I already use is truly configured to the proper standards.
I did catch a few points that i will be revamping in my delivery to the students. As we rolled out the online ed on my campus my students seemed really confused about what they were truly supposed to do...we had not set classroom hours. Having a clearer outlook for office hours would really help and discussing tech requirements from teh very beginning is essential.
I have found ways to help all learners become successful using the different techniques available for all level of learners through online. The support group will be great to help with new ideas of helping students become successful.
Knowing your CMS system is key and once you've built your course, it's then important to consider the timeline that is needed for our students to digest the the work and be mindful on how long it will take to complete it.
I find that organization and structure is key to assisting the on-line student. Expectations and deadlines along with further explanation options to students in need will enhance favorable performance and outcomes.
I learned that communication is crucial for the students understanding of the lessons, as well as for their experience with the CMS. Additionally, we are in part, also tech support for our students in order to minimize frustration.
Many of these points are used by NCCER. That is the system we use at GSYCF.
I have learned that the students feel more secure when they know someone(instructor) is there when they need help. I have also learned that we should know what the students see when they log on which has been something I am struggling with during my time online with them.
As a first time online instructor, I will need to learn every component of the Classroom Management System that the students will use and that I as a teacher will use. I need to anticipate problems that the students may have and be ready to answer them when they arise. I learned that I have a lot to learn!
I have learned that an online instructor should be very familiar with the LMS before he/she teaches the course material. In addition, students must have a LMS orientation BEFORE starting the online course. I have found both these items to be very true as we had to start online teaching in a hurry when the quarentine started.
It is important to think and develop the course format based on how you want it delivered. I do lock modules and will need to create a schedule or checklist to make sure my settings are inline with course format.
That structure is only one aspect of a course shell. Being able to navigate is equally important.
In order for students to be successful, I learned that it is very important for the CMS to be user friendly for students. Navagational simplicity is crucial for online couses because the features will alllow students to locate and use information with ease. A student should go through the school's CMS during orientation, so that their e-learning experience can feel comfortable. secure and successful.
I believe they have hhit the nail onthe head. It is included with the course platform we're currently using.
In an e-learning environment it is critical for the teacher to be well prepared before beginning the class. I have never taught an online class before, so my preparation will need to be very thorough. I would want to take the student orientation as mentioned in the material so that I am understanding what my students will be expected to accomplish.

As I teach a blended learning course, many of the components are in place, but in case of moving to a total online presense, then the rest of the course content would need to be modified and moved to accomodate the rest of the course offerings. Knowing the linear, module approach is helpful in setting up. Being able to facilitate content and technical questions is important.
Great explanations on the different types of communication
