Communication in an online course is very important. It is also for students and instructor to have set guidelines and expectations around communication. One way to ensure successful communication is to create a Code of Communication that describes the expectations and consequeces for students in regard to online communication. The Code of Communication will allow students to know what is expected of them and the instructor.

I understand that when there are guidelines applied to the communication process, the students will have an easier time navigation the coarse and be able to achieve a very strong communication process.
The Course Code of Conduct needs to be clear and identify consequences to students that do not adhere to the policy from the onset of the course. A rubric can also assist students to understand instructor expectations for civility and effective communication.
It is hard to convey tone when communicating online. I try to ask questions that assist the students to meet the objectives, such as can they find some research that supports the ideas they present, can they list examples, can they identify a way that this will be pertinent tot their practice.
You will need to set rules and boundries for online communication between all parties. If you don't it will cause chaos in the learning environment, because commen sense are a thing of the past.
I have been in ongoing communiction with my distance learning students. Before, I started teaching from a distance I taught face to face classes. Basically, the same guidelines shoud be followed they are just online. For example, students need you to communicate and motivate them whether they see you in a structured classroom or online. Whether you teach online or in a classrrom respect should be given from the facilitator and the student.
I really liked the rubric, we always tend to look at that for assignments, but not ancillarys to an assighment.
I plan to utilize the rubric in my next lauch of my online class.
I have learned to always establish rules and consequences for E-learning. Students have to understand that even thought they are using online tools they are still consequences and etiquette for completing online activities. Also, that I must have specific hours of availability so that students can ask questions and receive answers in a timely manner.
Establishing good communication is the bedrock of online teaching. Good planning is a necessity. Determining netiquette, civility, courtesy, etc. , then developing guidelines to suit your class leads to proper management of the communication process.

This is not so much what I learned but rather what I appreciate. I appreciated the sample communication code of conduct and the sample list of components in a patteren for communication. These are very very helpful.
Common sense should be the basic rule, but without experience, common sense may not be common. The instructor must also model appropriate communication and demonstrate leadership in this area. Setting standards early in the course is a necessary step to establish a level of professionalism.
The above exert from the module regarding common sense is perfect. As teachers, we must make sure that we are covering all areas, even if it seems like our students should know it. Modeling appropriate communication techniques is also vital to create a positive learning environment.
I learned the importance of establishing a communication code of conduct which needs to be part of the syllabus and possibly taught to the students more in depth if they have little experience with online classes.
