Then give them some information as such what your hobbies are or other simple information about yourself that helps open a line of communication. It is important that the students know that you are there to teach them but you are approachable if they need to ask questions.

This requires the instructor to initiate, lead and monitor classroom discussions and engaged those learners that may ntot be necessarily participating in a meaningful way.

I really enjoyed the suggestions about posting summaries of the students' discussion posts for the week - this is something I have not tried that I may need to implement in my course.
I have always sent my bio to students, but never once asked them to write one back. This could be a great way to get to learn more about students and create a bond.
