Even though the course is online, it is important to get to know your students on a personal level.

An online instructor can project their authority through academic credentials, professional experience, and achievement and students have better success when they have instructor support.

It is essential for online instruction to foster a learning environment that is structured to promote a learning experience that is:

  • Enriched by tapping into professional development, the instructor's presence, and by utilizing a variety of teaching strategies.
  • Meaningful by interjecting concepts of variable teaching methods, responsiveness to the students' needs, and a clear and concise structure.
  • Dynamic engagement can be achieved by the incorporation of interactive tools, varied activities, and regular personalized feedback

I learned techniques to establish an authority in the online classroom. I also learned how to develop more personal, yet professional relationships with my online students.

Establish your self, availability and expectations.

From this content, I learned that building strong one-on-one relationships with students is the foundation of a meaningful and dynamic learning environment, even in an online setting. Trust, respect, and genuine connection foster engagement and confidence. An effective way to begin creating this sense of community is by having students post personal biographies at the start of the course and encouraging them to read and interact with one another’s introductions. As an instructor, reviewing these profiles, sending personalized messages, and maintaining consistent, timely communication are key strategies for showing care and accessibility. I also learned the importance of being mindful of students’ individual needs, such as time zones or special accommodations, and using technology to promote synchronous and supportive interactions that strengthen the e-learning community.

As an online instructor I feel like because you don't meet in person with your student you still should develop a relationship with them to get to know your students. Offer support with being able to meet or join a live Q&A cohort or have recorded cohort's to explain sections of an assignment just in case students have questions. Also have office hours avaliable so that students can make appointments.

providing a professional biography for the instructor can help project authority. Ask for a biography from students as a first assignment.

This module helped me understand the importance of maintaining presence in the online classroom.

It is important to establish authority within the online platform to make sure the platform is used for class/topic purposes.  We should also establish or presence for support throughout the course and the student's success.

This module has deepened my understanding of being completely present in my online course. One of the key takeaways for me was the importance of really getting to know each student, and how it can positively impact both student engagement and learning outcomes. I intend to apply this by incorporating more active learning strategies, utilizing formative assessments, and employing inclusive language and materials. I also plan to share these insights with my colleagues during our next department meeting to encourage broader implementation. Learning from my peers' experiences and perspectives has also been incredibly valuable.

I look forward to continuing these conversations and refining my approach based on what others have found effective.

I learned that effective online learning depends on engagement, quality resources, and instructor support. I intend to apply this by staying active, using resources wisely, and seeking guidance when needed.

In this module, I learned how to project my presence and authority online, engage students in discussions, provide timely feedback, and build strong relationships. I plan to apply these strategies to create an interactive and supportive virtual classroom.

Getting to know the students in an online course is key to designing more effective and meaningful learning experiences. Understanding their profiles, needs, learning styles, expectations, and prior knowledge allows us to adapt content, activities, and teaching strategies to maintain their motivation and facilitate active participation. Furthermore, this knowledge helps create a more personal and human environment where students feel valued and supported, which increases their engagement and improves the results of the learning process.

There are multiple tools to use in your CMS and classes. From creating impact through audio, visual and text. Not only that, build still building a space that is not only safe - structured, understanding roles and background and using coaching conversations vs discipline.

I learned the importance of setting synchronous and asynchronous hours, as well as encouraging group study among students who live in the same area.

I learned that presence is shaped by more than just the words we say. The way we use tone, body language, and eye contanct can make a big difference in how students respond and stay engaged. I plan to apply this by being mindful of how I communicate, speaking with confidence, and making sure students feel included and connected during class.
