It’s about being visible, consistent, and engaged so students feel connected to the instructor. Presence is built through timely communication, clear expectations, and meaningful interaction, especially in discussion boards and feedback.
Building relationships is important from Day #1. I believe students will work harder and be more invested if they feel cared about in a genuine way. I like the idea of connecting personally with each student connecting to their Bio's. With this connection, students will feel more comfortable expressing their needs before they feel frustrated.
This module included tips on what to include in your bio and in what structure.
the importance of bio to help with your introduction.
We should be ready to initiate and lead the discussions. Help build a relationship by engaging with the students in the discussion, and not just reading it. Give feedback in a timely manner.
You should post a biography of yourself as a way of connecting with the students.
It is very important to find ways to connect with the online learner and to allow for the on line learners to connect with each other
I am be present, responsive, and organized to ensure all student feel visible and supported. This will gain respectful boundaries in an online classroom environment.
Extremely important to engage the students.
I think it is important as an instructor to be actively engaged in the learning process and being available for students.
I will be sure to post a bio of myself to include hobbies. I will also post a message for students to reach out to me and tell me something about themselves they would like me to know.
Make feel the students comfortable and close among the participants, is a very strong way to mark the presence.
You don't have to have a dominant presence to be know that you are there and are monitoring/contributing to conversations and growth.
My takeaway from this module was to not be to overbearing when it comes to the communication. I don't have to be the dominant presence in my discussions I want the students to feel heard. And also, to get to know each student to better understand how to help them.
Properly presenting your credentials helps build student confidence
It's important to connect with students and build a good rapport at the beginning of the course.
In this module I learned how to project yourself in the online format is to create a short biography of yourself, and also learn more about your students. If you do these things it helps to develop that relationship of trust with the student just like you would in the classroom.
The two points that stand out to me in this section of the module are:
- Before the end of the first week of the course, send a personalized message to each student. Identify any aspect of the student's biographical sketch you believe is safe to discuss. Send your personal comments. Remind them of your virtual office hours.
- Be sensitive to concerns learners express and questions they raise, and be consistent in the manner in which you provide timely feedback.
I think it is a special touch for the instructor to send a “personalized” message to each student because it demonstrates that the instructor took the time to review and reflect on the student’s posted narrative prior to responding to it. Being sensitive to what the learners express as their concerns exhibits the instructor as a supportive educator who acts as a reliable guide rather than just a lecturer. It emphasizes empathy, responsiveness to emotional and academic needs, and a fair, structured approach to communication.
