It is interesting to me now that I can look back how my instructors used these techniques. For example I don't know how many "biographies" I have written on all my first days of class in Canvas.
Publishing my biography as an instructor and requiring students to as well can be an effective way to begin your e-learning community.
Having a personal biography for the students which includes your level of expertise will ensure them that they are being well taught. Encouraging students to also have their own biography is a way for the instructor to get to know the student.
I learned the value of using my personal experience to highlight my expertise and credentials.
Connecting with students is important for them to feel comfortable asking questions.
I learned that I can project my presence online. I learned that I do not have to dominate all discussions to project my presence but rather be selective as to what questions I will respond to.
I love teaching online Hybrid, so I see my students at equal increments of time. So they can, in person, express concerns or clarify concerns they had from online.
I learned that being present for both in person and online students is important. Ensure that you make plans for students who learn differently. Reach out to students individually to re-introduce yourself and let them know your availability.
For my next class i'll post a video introducing myself instead of writing a brief paragraph.
Students need to know that an instructor is qualified. By providing a bio of myself that includes educational credentials, and professional experience, this goal can be achieved.
creating and posting a short bio of yourself and have the students do the same will assist each side in learning about and building confidence in each other.
Introducing yourself and having students introduce themselves to the instructor and peers.
Project your presence. Posting a short biography of myself is a great way for the students to get to know my credentials, experiences and feel as if they are with me. I enjoy getting to know students, so I love the idea of them posting a short biography so the entire class can engage in conversations and feel good about working with each other. I live in the pediatric world, therefore "caring is sharing", lol
First impression, Provide students with a short Bio of who you are, your experience in related course you are teaching.
Set expectations from day one.
This course describes the importance of utilizing every tool that is available to instructor to create a lasting, learning and professional relationship with their students.
engagement in online courses are critical as the students are not in a classroom setting. engaging with students and creating a positive learning space allows for greater retention of attention from students.
Engaging with students frequently is important because it makes the students feel supported.
It's very important to actively work on building a relationship with your students. You have to be intentional and attentive in order to be successful at this. Let students know who you are as well as learning who they are and sharing expectations helps break the ice and get things going on a smooth start.
I've taken many courses online as a student and I always enjoy when the instructor provides a little bio about themselves, including their occupation - if they have one other than being an instructor and their relative experience related to the course topic.
By providing information about you as an instructor you may gain the trust and respect from the students. By sharing who you are and your expertise you are allowing the students to be more comfortable in a classroom setting with you and to trust you and what you are instructing.
It is best practice to build a good relationship with the students by posting a short bio of yourself and for students to post a short bio of themselves
