Helping Students Communicate Effectively Online | Origin: EL105

This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Online Language: Communicating with Students -->  Helping Students Communicate Effectively Online

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

In this topic, I learned that helping students communicate effectively online means giving them clear guidelines, modeling the tone we want them to use, and showing them how to ask questions or respond respectfully in a digital space. Communication expectations from day one and giving students examples and reminders so they feel confident speaking up and participating online.

I am a Gen X.  It is true that I prefer to work alone and don't like busy work.

Understanding student backgrounds can be just as important as setting communication guidelines.  Students will have different levels of experience with technology.  They will also have different expectations when it comes to communication and what is professional.

I like that this module discussed the importance of understanding differences between the generations and considering the skills and maturity required for students to be successful in an online classroom. These factors do make a huge difference in how those individuals show up in online spaces. If I notice that someone is not responding well, perhaps they might need some technology assistance or some mentorship in that area that I can offer to them.

Different forms of communication tactics must be placed in the course syllabus

Silence is information, not defiance.

When students go radio-silent, it tells you something broke. It could be technology barriers, unclear expectations, fear of looking stupid, or just that the activity has no clear purpose. This is especially true, depending on the generation. I've found that Gen X likes to get to the point. And to a Gen Z student, submitting a missing assignment IS communicating with the instructor.

The fix isn't nagging. It's consistent outreach to see what failed.

I enjoyed learning better to appreciate generational learning and communication styles, but I think it is important to never stereotype any student.

I learned that students communicate more effectively online when expectations are clear, modeling is consistent, and support is built into the course. I plan to apply this by setting communication norms early, providing examples of effective online interactions, and guiding students toward respectful, constructive participation.

I've taken several online courses the instructor's response time to messages and replies to chat threads were always the most important points to me as a student.

Clear guidelines, regardless of generation, will make your class run smoother...BUT, you have to adhere to the rules you set!

Prior to beginning the online course, the online instructor must be able to develop may forms of communication to meet the needs of the various types of individuals from different generations. Even though the older generation prefers much different communication that Gen Z'ers, the online instructor must still encourage everyone to communicate in different forms.

Before starting an online course, a student should possess foundational skills in:

·        Time Management:

The ability to organize and plan a personal learning schedule is essential for keeping up with coursework, as there are no physical class bells to keep you on track.

·        Self-Discipline and Self-Motivation:

You must be able to set goals and stay motivated without constant in-person supervision to manage your own learning environment.

·        Reading and Writing Skills:

Online learning relies heavily on written communication, so being able to read and understand materials and write clear, well-structured messages is essential.

·        Computer and Technology Literacy:

Students' working knowledge of email, the internet, and the specific learning platform would be required to find assignments, participate in discussions, and complete tasks.

Additionally, personal qualities are advantages:

·        Adaptability:

The ability to adjust to a virtual classroom setting and learn through new technology is key to navigating the online learning experience.

·        Independence:

Online courses require you to be an independent learner who can take direction, complete tasks, and work at your own pace.

·        Communication:

You need to be comfortable communicating with instructors and peers through digital avenues such as email and discussion forums, and be proactive in asking questions.

·        Resilience and Problem-Solving:

Being persistent when facing challenges, as well as being willing to seek help rather than getting stuck.

·        Organization:

You should be able to organize your study space, materials, and time effectively to create a productive learning environment

It is important to identify the needs of online students, share how they can reach out to you and have a clear syllabus outlining expectations.

It is important to take the time to explain the basic rules of communication in the different study modules to students, in order to improve their understanding of the virtual platform, classes, and other moments of communication.

In this module, I learned the importance of effective online communication and the role that netiquette plays in creating a positive and respectful virtual learning environment. I gained a better understanding of how to communicate clearly, respectfully, and professionally in online discussions, emails, and group work.

One key takeaway for me was how a well-defined communication code of conduct helps set expectations and reduces misunderstandings. I also learned about the importance of tone, clarity, and empathy when engaging with peers and instructors in digital spaces.

I intend to apply what I’ve learned by being more mindful of my tone and word choice in online discussions and making sure to contribute in a constructive and respectful way. Whether I’m participating in group projects or sending messages to instructors, I now understand how crucial it is to maintain professionalism and courtesy.

This module taught me that communication is key, but we also need to consider the demographics of my class. Every generation is different and making sure we are aware will help our online instruction.

Have clear guidelines for the online students so they can participate proactively.

This module helped me understand the different communication requirements of different generations such as Genz, Gen Y, Baby boomers etc.

This module made me think more about multi-generational populations in my courses and how this can affect communications in the class.  I find it is challenging to determine the generation of a student, so I have to watch for the various traits as they come out and be prepared to work with them to improve skills or take advantage of the skills they have.
