Assessments should be planned, use various strategies to test knowledge, and be directly connected to the learning objectives. I liked learning about the rubrics and how to use objectives and criteria because I mostly grade summative assessments using rubrics.
Meaningful feedback is just as important as the final assessment grade. It is also a good practice to have students assess their own work - with time to revise - and then have instructor score the work. This gives them a better understanding of what met expectations and what didn't.
This is a good reminder of good teaching practices.
Well thought out Rubrics can help the students understand the full expectations for a project and when enough detail is provided in the criteria, could help curb a lot of common problems like spelling, grammar and too little information provided.
Providing a rubric is important for students and the teacher. Allowing students to use rubric to check others work and make changes to their own is important.
What i learned from this is that FEEDBACK is important. Don't just give a grade. Give an explanation on how or what needs to be improved. If you have a special needs student, use the appropriate feed ex. if one is blind give verbal, hearing impaired give written.
The immediate and positive feedback provided on assignments/projects is an important factor in student success. Feedback should be:
- Connected to learning objectives as well overall SLOs for the course. Connecting a rubrics to it is an interesting thought and one that I may pursue later.
- Frequent as applied to assignments, projects, and online responses
- Positive in tone-negative comments or tones will discourage the student
- Responses should be automatic or within a 48 hour period if at all possible.
- Feedback should be provided in a variety of ways such as:
- written peer or instructor feedback on assignments, projects, discussions, etc.
- auditory during synch instruction
- visual during synch instruction or written
- Individualized feedback is essential to making sure that the student understands that the instructor is evaluating or reviewing their work and not someone elses.
- Specific and detailed-instructors should gather specific or detail examples of the student work. In our case we use measurements when inspecting a students project that they made in class. Comments or questions we have are directed to them specifically regarding the projects and/or assignment. This the same whether it is online or face to face instruction.
Providing feedback to students is critical at this time. It is also important to create feedback for yourself and peers as a support network.
Providing feedback goes deeper than simply assigning a grade and the type of feedback to be given will vary depending on the nature of the assignment being discussed
Providing feedback that is effective and meaningful to each student is crucial their learning. As teachers it is vital that we provide feedback that each of our students can take to improve upon their learning when necessary.
Meaningful feedback increases the student's knowledge of the subject matter. Formative and summative assessments should be used.
Feedback strikes me as a good way to energize the class. Summative and formative assessments are important. But using the tools described in this information, a rubric may be a fair way to assess individuals/groups and peer functions.
I will continue to use rubrics within my curriculum of grading, but I will improve the student's access to it. I like the idea.
Assessment is key to improved learning and I will now add peer-assessment.
Feedback is important for students.
This was mostly a review, I did learn that fomative assesments are to assess progress.
Feedback is crucial in establishing what the instuctor wants from the student. If there is no communication, attrition could take place.
As an earlier poster commented, I didn't necessarily learn something "new". I definitely needed to be reminded of the importance of rubrics and of giving the opportunity for students to use them to self-assess before turning in projects/presentations for a final grade. I wil comment too that teaching virtually will now eliminate an issue I have of running out of time to do an exit ticket.
Rubrics, assessments and feedback are essential to learning.
Providing feedback is essential to assisting online students in correcting errors in their writing.
Rubrics should be clear and explained along with the project instructions for understanding. Peer and Self assessments are opportunities to learn from others, view mistakes as an opportunity to make changes and provide for a transfer of learning to future projects. Feedback should be communicated as information to increase learnng, not to justify a grade.
