I learned about the different learning types. I have not yet seen the "Intimidator" type as a student. Perhaps what is just as important is how to elicit responses from "depdendent" and the quiet ones. Lastly, I learned how to keep the surfing and meandering students back on track.

The section on counseling is highly important because students will come to the instructor with all manner of problems, from personal to technical. It is important to set expectations, such as 24 hr turn around (not immediate), confidentiality, and escalation if necessary.

Unfortunately some students may get disruptive to the point that it disrupts the learning of the other students. Keeping these types of disruptions is imperative and this is done by following the policy/procedure conduct manuals.

It is better to understand instutional policies as they apply to e-learners. Understanding the different type of students and managing the online environemnet is essential to avoid conflicts and disruptive behaviours in online course.

Its important to keep the students engaged to elimimate alienantion and drop out

It is important to maintain lines of communication open with the elearner.

I learned that their are different learning types, and communication is key.

Attrition Management is one I worry about often.  Especially if a student feels alienated, and I am unaware they feel that way until it too late.  Sometimes they do not participate openly in a synchronous environment, but asynchronously they do great.  How do we judge then?

I agree with the first statement in the module: An effective way of managing student data is effective recordkeeping. Ensure privacy is very important. We must follow FERPA laws. In my educational experiences, I have found that keeping student communications is very important, both from students and my responses to them. Document phone calls, archive emails, and maintain other forms of communications as a way to manage conflict and provide documentation of your interventions and communication.

I learned how to respond to students who are seeming to test the boundaries of instructor authority by trying to intimidate to achieve a higher grade.

The record keeping of classes must be thought out in great detail before the class begins or you could find yourself and the students in situations that dont work to each of your advantage.

I learned that participation and communication may be difficuly in online learning, but us as instructors have the tools to make the process easier and effective.

I LEARNED THAT IT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP COURSE RECORDS, HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH STUDENTS. IT IS IMPORTANT TO COUNSEL STUDENTS AND TO DEAL WITH UNDERSIRABLE BEHAVIOR. I MUST RESOLVE STUDENT CONFLICTS AND MINIMIZE STUDENT ATTRITION

I learned about different types of students that may be be addressed: noisy, dsruptive etc. I will keep these categories in mind as student interactions begin.

I felt pretty identified with this module because I have had several noisy and disruptive students. Therefore, what I learned from this module was: 1. Set limits (communication via e-mail, list the topcs that may require the teachers response, answer in 24-hours), 2. Make an FAQ document, 3. Send personal emails to the noisy or disruptive ones; 4. Read carefully their bios and try to connect with some of their interests (this also is useful for quiet students).

I never thought about the fact that student personalities are just as varied online as they are in face-to-face settings.  This basic information is very helpful!

I am finding that the newer versions of the learning managment systems are starting to include new and better facilities for managing student records.  Integrated email and messaging, more capability to communicate on assignments through the gradebook and so on.  These new tools are helping a lot.

Staying engaged can alert to changes in student behaviors and reveal diengagement. It is important to support the student in the virtual environemt to promote retention.

Communication is key. Quick and to the point communication will help stave off unnecessary issues.

Online teaching and learning, although its not a new concept it is the new normal. It does take a new level of maturity, commitment and responsibility for students to set their own pace  and agenda. It comes down to scheduling and commitment to completing the work designed to accomplish fruition.
