Ask a question from your peers to help you in your professional work. Seek different points of view on a topic that interests you. Start a thought-provoking conversation about a hot, current topic. Encourage your peers to join you in the discussion, and feel free to facilitate the discussion. As a community of educators, all members of the Career Ed Lounge are empowered to act as a discussion facilitator to help us all learn from each other.

Mentoring

I agree that mentoring is the key to promoting positive behavior. As instructors we are leaders and role models for our students. Jennifer

Knowing students.

In a short period of time what are the key questions to ask student without over stepping or making a student feel that you are invaiding personal space.

retention

I think that a harder entry exam would cut down on drops. Am i wrong to think that way, If we make sure students are more capable to do the work we will have a higher retention rate? I say this because I think the entry tests that are given are way to easy.

Admissions' role in future student retention

Do you think the new proposed federal regulations will create an environment where admissions can be free to enroll only those applicants truly qualified for the program? I do think that in the end it will be proven that enrolling only qualified candidates will improve all areas of the institution, not the least of which being retention.

Be a Team

As educators, we have to work as a team and encourage our students in any way we can. We have to pull together as faculty to ensure the student's success.

Our First Impression

This section hit home with me when dealing with first impressions. I have always judged a person by my first impression. They usually do have about ten minutes and that either makes or breaks the interaction.

Helping Students With Their HABE's

After reading this section, it reminds me so much of just self confidence. Letting our students know that no matter where they came from, there is always something they can work for and that is an education. They can be the first on in their family to earn a degree.

Mentoring

This section is so correct. A student does expect to be held accountable. Even though we may know the topic of discussion we are teaching, we have to get to know our students and let them know we are human and care. On the other side of that, the student has to know they are still accountable for the syllabus contents.

Placement Programs

It is essential for students to understand the importance of the degree they are trying to obtain and what the job market looks like in the real world for that degree. Are there going to be jobs available? If so, where are they and how much are they going to pay? That is what a student wants to know also.

Getting Students Involved

It is so important that students get involved with each other. They may not know another sole, but as an instructor, we have to help them meet people. These potential acquaintences could be a life saver to them to help them study.

Orientation Programs

A good orientation program is essential to student retention. Students have to understand what is expected of them and we have to understand what the student is expecting of us.

Retention

One of the best ways to ensure good retention is to ensure you have a good candidate for the program. We have to help a student look for the right program in which they are best suited.

Retention practices

What are some of the best practices currently at your place of employement?

Introductions

I always encourage the students to submit a biography and I do the same. I think this establishes a rapport for each of the students in order for them to get to know each other.

Student Information

Encourage our students to be competent and interested in learning and succeeding. Encourage them to do their best and ask for help when necessary.

Orientation

It takes each and every person in an organization to make orientation successful. Students have to have all of the information on the school, the instructors and the course to be successful.

Student Expectations

We have to provide a helpful atmosphere for our students to learn. We have to make them feel comfortable in our classroom, even if they are scared to death.

How Do We Improve Retention

The best way to improve retention is to listen to our students. If they are having a hard time understanding the information we are trying to teach, change the way the information is delivered. If they are having issues with getting their assignments completed, change the way we are delivering the assignment. Listening is a key component to learning.

Intervention

When a student is in need of assistance, there are many flags that are sometimes there and we don't see them at first. One of the most obvious flags, is when they are not participating in their discussion and/or turning in their assignments. That is the time we have to make contact with them to let them know we do care.

Committment

Our committment to the student as an instructor is as important to their success as the information we are trying to convey to them. If we don't show compassion and empathy for our students, they are going to sense that feeling and it does affect their success.
