Building and Testing the Rubric | Origin: EL109

This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Using Rubrics to Enhance Online Learning --> Building and Testing the Rubric

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

I have created many rubrics but have not properly vetted them before using them. I love the idea of testing. When I graded research papers, I used to put them in piles based on a holistic approach. This would be a great way to test a rubric for accuracy. I also need to take out ranges in the criteria unless I am able to quantify the differences between point values.

Having a group that you can monitor and evaluate as you are creating or changing a rubric will help withe their self-assessment when the class is over.

I learned that When building and testing a rubric, it is important to be fair to each student.

Building and Testing Rubrics requires full understanding of the Criteria and Student requirements.  Rubrics are formatted originally to meet the needs of the learning objective, as used and development evolves and involving others help better define the Rubrics to meet the requirements of learning. Identify the purpose, Identify the Criteria, determine the level of assessment, describe each criterion, involve others in the development, Pre-test and retest rubrics based on feedback.

Rubrics contribute to a more organized, objective, and goal-oriented learning environment.

There are so many different components to a rubric.  I should be fair and editable if need be.

Understanding the important of knowing the diverse experience that each student brings in the virtual classroom is a critical factor in the evolutionary process of creating rubrics that "fit" the learning environment.

I am going to start using resources to help me build rubrics.

There is no one way to develop a rubric. The rubric can be developed using a multitude of resources that speak directly to what it is that is needed.

I did not realize that there are so many rubric/assessment options. This section revealed five of them to me: Alternative Assessment, Analytic Rubrics, Holistic Rubrics, Formative Assessment, and Summative Assessment.

There should be a holistic approach to creating rubrics with regard to the test or benchmark it is referencing.

It is important to review your rubric to make sure it performs the way you want it to.

Evaluating your rubrics for effectiveness is essential before you actually use it; however, I have found situations occur that throw a curve ball into the use. I wait to release grades until I have graded all students for fairness and consistency across the board. Sometimes I am actually lenient to the first students to help me not to be too strict in my assessments.

Rubrics should be clear and you can find examples on the internet

I was unaware there are websites you can access for rubrics.  I plan to research that a bit more:)

To build and create rubrics you need to determine the purpose of the assignment, establish clear criteria, determine the scoring method/sheet, and describe descriptors. And lastly, while creating rubrics we have to be sensitive to the language used.

Rubrics should be made fair and weighted reasonably for the components of the assignments.

Las rúbricas se componen de una escala con descriptores y criterios. También pueden incluirse estándares e indicadores. Una escala indica los puntos que se asignarán al calificar la calidad de un trabajo.

larity within a rubric should help describe the dimensions of performance in sufficient detail so that two raters who understand the rubric in the same way would evaluate a particular performance or product in the same way.
