The best way to evaluate rubrics is to first explain them to students. If it is new to me, it is new to them. I would also encourage students to use the rubric to plan their work, and then as a review tool before submission. As a professor, I would also not assume they will know how to do that.

To build and create rubrics you need to determine the purpose of the assignment, establish clear criteria, determine the scoring method/sheet, and describe descriptors. And lastly, while creating rubrics we have to be sensitive to the language used.

One of the issues when it comes to using rubrics is that it gives students too much information. This can overwhelm students instead of empowering them. Also, as a professor, it can be extremely difficult for us to come up with the appropriate language for the rubric so that the expectations are very clear to the students.

In response to the use of rubrics. Rubrics are a multi-purpose scoring guide for assessing student products and performances. The initial step when creating a rubric is to identify the criteria that define the performance to better grade and identify knowledge strengths and areas where the students need assistance with.
