Communication Essentials --> Advanced Listening Skills

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

Listening is the most important part of a communication process. It is very important to show your students that you are listening. I have learned about the 3 levels and principles of active listening. I intend to make sure my student knows that my focus will always be on them.

The 3 levels of knowing how to listen and I learned to know how to get to know people according to each situation and for this repeating, rephrasing and reflecting are the principles to take into account to understand each person

Now aware of the three levels of listening, I'll be more conscious of when I'm internal listening in day-to-day conversations.

Poor listening skills can lead to a major beak down in communication.

We must always take a step back and listen to the person that is speaking to us and keep awareness of their message delivery.

Advanced active listen helps build trust and relationships. I intend to use it to help build better bonds and to build environments where people feel safe and are willing to listen to coaching or feedback.

Active listening can be successful if you truly desire to help and understand. When we are actively listening, you are also building trust with the student.

I learned that listening is the most important component of communication.

Active listening is very important when understanding what students need and want.  By being present and reiterating/repeating their needs and questions to be clear in our own understanding we can help them to achieve their goals.

Listening IS the job. Thus, learning how to repeat, rephrase, and reflect serves to help you do your job effectively. It takes practice and understanding the levels 1-3 from "it is all about me" to "hyper focus listening" to "being aware of the emotions of the exchange".

Learned some factors that display poor listening techniques and skills and the effective ways to identify and correct the behaviors associated with them.

This section was straight-forward and a subject matter that I have completed several hours of training and module courses in relation to. None the less, listening is a communication journey.

I need to monitor my body language, I need to seek to understand the needs of the person communicating, I need to rephrase to ensure my understanding and the other person will feel better that I understand

Active listening is important when building a relationship with a prospective student. They should feel heard and welcomed when going through the admission process.

Active listening is the total process of a combination of actions like asking open-ended questions, reflecting on information received and providing meaningful feedback in a timely manner

increase the capacity for listening

Active listening can be developed.  We can flow between the stages of listening.  It is important to be able to identify where you are in the active listening stages and when it is appropriate to engage the most suitable level of listening when interacting with students, and associates.

Listening attentively is very important in order to connect to your student and use the correct words when asking questions, glad to know that we need to avoid the word "why" when asking .

Knowing how to listen is vital when having a conversation. Listening tools are internal tools would can always practice on a daily basis and will benifet you in your professional and personal life.
