Relationship Building in the Admissions Process | Origin: AD200

Building a trustworthy relationship during the admissions process is crucial. This module emphasizes the importance of understanding and addressing the needs of prospective students. By discussing past experiences and planned goals, both the advisor and the student can align their efforts to achieve the desired career outcomes. It's essential to offer support with professionalism, show genuine interest, and highlight the advantages of the program honestly. This approach not only fosters trust but also ensures that both sides are committed to the student's success.

In this module, we explored the importance of building a trustworthy relationship during the admissions process. We discussed how understanding and addressing the needs of prospective students is crucial. By discussing past experiences and planned goals, both the advisor and the student can align their efforts to achieve the desired career outcomes. We emphasized the importance of offering support with professionalism, showing genuine interest, and highlighting the advantages of the program honestly. This approach fosters trust and ensures that both sides are committed to the student's success.

We also covered the significance of motivational stories and how they can help move the conversation forward without being too pushy. By sharing success stories of graduates and understanding the obstacles they faced, we can provide prospective students with a clearer understanding of the benefits and support they can expect.

Additionally, we discussed the value of having a mix of great sales techniques and product knowledge. This combination helps both the advisor and the student feel comfortable with the possibility of enrolling. We highlighted the importance of obtaining more information about the academic side of the student's education and how to proactively gather this information.

Finally, we outlined the steps to close the sale, including reviewing perceived deficits and accomplishments, reiterating the benefits of the program, and asking for enrollment. By following these steps, we can effectively support the student's decision-making process and ensure a positive outcome for both the student and the institution.

The 3Fs

When overcoming objections the Feel, Felt, Found method actually demonstrates the ability to use your emotional intelligence to understand and deal with people.

Effective Listening:

Active listening takes work and intention. - Shutting out noise can also mean simply focusing in on your attention fully on the conversation. Not looking at a phone, multitasking, and only thinking about a response shows a person you are NOT fully listening.

Raymond Donnelly

The most beneficial and obvious focus of this segment that I noticed was the emphasis placed on the "Why"; delving deeper, exploring (respectfully) to both motivate and understand the students position and perspective.

Listening

Have you ever lost yourself by drifting off during a person's question? How do you recover from that?

ATTITUDE

Having a positive attitude is so important in the educational field! having a positive attitude can make things go so much smoother in your day, it relaxes the people and the atmosphere around you allowing people to open up to you to recieve and give vital information.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when a student mentions cost first?

I have noticed most of the time in admissions, especially, with adult learners or transfer learners, that price is the first thing that is looked at when looking into finishing or starting their degree. One approach that I have taken being an adult learner myself, is to ask open-ended questions to find out the "Why" - why are they looking, why now, etc. That gives you a chance to understand what motivates them and then have an open dialect to why our university may align with both their needs and wants - I can explain how it can get them to their goals. Thoughts?

Retake

Listening Skills

Active listening use verbal and Non-verbal techniques to show and keep their attention on the speaker.

Does anyone else feel more empowered after understanding how much influence we have over those that we meet with now?

I feel a sense of responsibility more now than prior to this brief training. I have always know these things but it is necessary to get a fresh insight or take on what it is that I actually do.

Active Listening & Non-Verbal Cues

I have found most of the techniques presented to be very helpful. However the tricky one is Non-Verbal cues. I work with online students and are rarely face to face. I have been putting more focus on Voice Quality than Body Language or Facial Expressions. Do you use any other best practices for phone conversation?
