In establishing your late and missed assignment rule make sure it's clear. Create a class calendar with deadline dates highlighted, underlined, in bold print, and in a larger font. Distribute the calendar along with the syllabus and point out the deadline dates. As deadlines approach, give them a "heads up" on the coming date.
Understanding that there will be a certain amount of missed assignments so that I am not disappointed or frustrated with them or myself.

I like the icebreakers to get them engaged. Also, assessing how well my planned strategies worked or did not work and how to improve what I'm doing. Anytime I can get them working in a team situation I try to do so, especially when I can pair more advanced students with less capable students.
I love to use icebreakers to start a new class or subject. It helps me find out allot about my students.
I am usually a sucker for a decent excuse for late assignments from my students but I after having read what was included in this training about how the people that we train you for wont accept late products, I think I will be changing my ways!

Furthermore, explaining how turning in assignments on time will help them in their career choice as well. Learning to organize themselves to accomplish goals on time is crucial for career success.
The icebreaker or lead into the material can set the tone for the class and students are more likely to engage and participate.
Set a goal for the students, Make them understand the application of the course, importance with the career building. Set a class rule and be strict to it.

Be clear and precise in your syllabus. Include highlighted due dates and review this on the first day. Include any projects and group work that are included and explain the rationale for their inclusion. If time permits include some form of group activity to demonstrate how group work can be a benefit. Unfortunately and realistically, not all programs can afford this luxury.
I need to develop an ice breaker for the beginning of class. I usually cover several aspects of the class but it's flat and boring. I also need to better develop a process for late work rather than relying on my descretion.
Have clear expectations set in place for students
Ice breaking comes naturally to me, I like to know who I'm in the room with. People tend to speak more often where friendly is.
As technology advances I feel we all need to know the basics for the classroom, and incorporate that in our lessons to keep students engaged. I always go through all expectations and also constantly let students know about due dates for all assignments.
A learning environment is a growing living thing. Go with your instincts to enhance learning and engage all learners.
I too find starting with an ice breaker first class promotes that each students' voices heard. Can open the door for students who tend to be a bit hesitant to share publicly. I also find an activator at the start of each class very important to spark prior learning and mis understandings.
I have students from different school and different skill levels so first few meeting is getting to know each other. It is a time for me to learn the different skill set levels.
