Instructing Learners with Disabilities | Origin: ED106

This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Enhancing Student Learning --> Instructing Learners with Disabilities

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

This topic increased my awareness of the challenges and strengths that learners with disabilities bring to the classroom. I learned that these students can achieve high levels of success when provided with appropriate accommodations, clear instructions, additional time, and supportive learning environments. Understanding individual learning needs helps instructors create more inclusive and effective lessons. I intend to apply this knowledge by being flexible in my teaching methods, communicating with students about their needs, and providing necessary support. By fostering an inclusive classroom, I can help all students feel valued, engaged, and capable of succeeding.

Work with students to get them the same content knowledge as other learners.

I learned that students with learning disabilities can succeed with the right support. I will apply this by being patient, inclusive, and understanding of different learning needs.

This module discusses different types of learning disabilities and how to help students with a learning disability. There are five types of learning disabilites - dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, auditory processing disorder, and verbal learning disability. The most common is dyslexia, which is a miscommunication between hearing or seeing a word and processing it. Students with learning disabilities in college level courses have probably learned ways to cope with their disability, and can give you suggestions to help them. Common ways to support students with a disability include separating questions or problems with a text box, separating paragraphs, taping lectures, giving more time to complete assignments or tests, allowing verbal answers or scribing for test questions, and using illustrations.

It is beneficial for the student and faculty to use the college or university resources for students to define the accommodations to be successful in class. this may include more time for assignments or assessments, audio and/or video of lecture, a scribe or assistant or other interventions.

Be sure to let the class know that if they need any accommodations for learning to notify me so I can make sure I can make the necessary adjustments.

I've enjoyed working with many students with learning disabilities in my woodworking class. They often perform at higher than average levels with great results.

Encourage students to always express their needs or leaning habits. Navigate ways to help students with disabilities succeed in the class by communicating and trying different avenues.

Encourage students to come to you and share if they have learning disabilities and to let you know what services have been successful in the past.

I’ve learn how too apply my self to teach students with learning disabilities, by asking questions and doing little things that will help the. Remember what was covered in class like having them voice record the learning lesson.

My takeaway is to be able to know what methods I can use to help the students understand the information from the class.

Loved understanding different ways to accommodate the students with disabilities!

This was very helpful, I had a student with autism and I wish I had had this class before she came. Thank you, I know how to handle things better!

How difficult it is for someone with dyslexia to try to read some sentences. I hope to be able to offer additional support to students with any disabilities in order to help them be successful.

I learned that students with learning disabilities are capable of success when provided with appropriate supports and accommodations, rather than lowered expectations. I plan to apply this by communicating with students about their needs, using flexible instructional strategies, and providing accommodations such as additional time and varied response options to support their learning.

Students with learning disabilities may require additional time to complete tasks and benefit from an individualized approach.

I intend to apply this by engaging in direct dialogue with students to identify successful past strategies and utilizing clear formatting to ensure anatomical concepts remain inclusive and navigable for everyone.

upgrading course materials to include boxes and such will be an easy adjustment, also encouraging the students to self advocate is something to encourage more often

I am more aware of the needs & challenges each student may bring with them to the classroom environment.
