Back up plan

Back up plans are necessary because of adjustments in content to adapt to learners. When an unanticipated need arises we still need to cover the content.

make up tests

I always create a new test for students who miss and it must be taken in the next class they attend. Its imperitive to give a new test as students are creative in copying and providing their friends with the test.

Power Point presentations and Smart Board

I love my smart board it makes the power point presentations pop.

Power point

Textbook formatted power points can be brief, it is important to elaborate on each slide.

Organization

Being organized before the lecture takes place eliminates distractions.

Poor exam scores

When the whole class scores poorly the objectives need to be covered and reviewed then retest.

Choices

When students can make choices about the lecture, they are more compliant.

Power point

Power point presentations can be confusing for some learn ears.

Field trips

Worksheets in the form of a treasure hunt for field trips challenges the student to be more observant.

Technology Integration

What do you do when the equipment and supplies needed to integrate technology are not supported by the school. Even though administrators want teachers to use new technologies?

How to deal with students who are often absent

Students who regularly miss class present special challenges for teachers; often these students don't have a good reason for missing class. How do you help them? There isn't time to go back over lots of material, otherwise you will run out of time and slow the progress of the other students. I suggest to students that they ask classmates for notes or input. I also highlight major points. I expect students to read class assignments and be prepared for quizzes and exams. What do other teachers do?

Lecture

If you don't feel 100% confident in a lecture you are giving, is it ok to bring in another instructor to help with the lecture? If so, do you tell the students prior to the lecture you don't feel comfortable or do you just play it off?

Using technology

This is one are that can be incredibly helpful (At least to me) I use a combination of guided notes and a presentation for some of my clases. I use keynote for presentation and remote control the presentation from my phone. The best part is that keynote displays the slide by slide notes I made on my phone. This gives me the ability to move around the classroom and guide students thru the guided notes. This way I can hit Visual and auditory learners and some Kinesthetic learners with the guided notes

Assessment Test

Before a new class I always have a pre and post assessment test. This serves two functions: 1) It gives me a base line of knowledge for the class. 2) By showing students the pre and post they can see thier own progress, This helps to motivate a student.

Detailed Lesson Plan

This is incredibly important. Due to outside work form the institution, some instructors (including myself) can't teach the same class every time, so we have a very detailed lesson plan that includes resources, day by day layouts and also we include a FAQ for adjunct instructors and let them know where students tend to struggle. This way we can have a consistent level of instruction regardless of who the instructor is.

Value Resources

One way to get my students to read periodicals on a recurring basis is to pick an article every two weeks thats relevant to the subject thats been taught. I take 30 mins to discuss the article with the class. This way students become accustomed at looking thru new material on a regular basis. Does anybody do something like this? I would like to change the format a bit. PS: Im not the only one that selects the article, I have students selct articles as well.

Sharing with the students..

I always share my story with my students. It allows them to see that I am human just as they are human. I am going through many of the same situations as my students, so I not only hear their stories, but I fully understand their stories.

Lesson Plans

Enjoyed the module. Lesson plans are very critical pertaining to the success of the instructor overall delivery of the material. Without these plans, the instructor could very well be out of boundaries with the material. Indeed, lesson plans should be designed to be direct and basically a guideline to the overall agenda of the day. Students feel reassured when they have structure and when they are confident to see the instructor consistently prepared.

Guest Speakers

As a culinary instructor, I think bringing a guest speaker, such as, a Restaurant Chef, General Manager, Banquet Chef and etc, can enhance the learning experience for the students. The students will get a clear picture as to what the culinary industry is about and why it is necessary to learn the fundamental basics before entering the industry. It also keeps the students engaged and enthusiatic.

Pretesting

On day 1 of the class, I hand out a short pretest and ask the students to comment briefly on what they expect from this class. This gives me a picture of how much the students know and also what they intend to learn. Its very useful and helpful for me.
