Knowing the pros/cons of both Asynchronous and synchronous discussions allows for you as the instructor to be better prepared when engaging with your online learners. As the instructor it is important for you to monitor and engage with your students while guiding them through the course objectives. It's important for instructors to provide feedback that encourages participation and builds confidence with our learners.

Keep discussions active and interesting. Use communication skills that your students will understand.

Participating in discussion forums is great for the students' online experience. When they see an instructor reply to their post, it adds interest and motivation to that student and their work. This translates further down the line throughout the course, also. That same student will now be more likely to participate in the discussion assignments because the instructor engaged with them (and engages with all the students, regularly).

Synchronous on-line learning can occur constructively.  In this environment it is important to allow time for small talk at the beginning of a session (and potentially during as wel, depending on how teh course is structured). This builds trust between the students and the instructor that helps to facilitate more interaction and a better learning experience.  One word of caution for synchronous on-line environments: it is easy to forget that there is a group, so be careful to handle any potential criticism or ranking/grading of students' material individually. A seperate individual email or one-on-one synchronous session may be necessary for this.

Use synchronous discusson to one on one interactions with student, easier to manage and more personalized feedback.

Asynchronus discussions are best to encourage participation from students.

This part was important because we learned about promoting asynchronous and synchronous debates and how to give feedback to the student

Asynchronus discussions are best to encourage participation from students.

Synchronous and asynchronous discussions are vitally important for online learning. Motivating students to participate in them is often difficult. I think the key is in the questions that the teacher designs, the consistency in the moderation of the forum and that the instructor considers evaluating the participation of the students with degrees. It has given me good results to create teams and appoint a boss for each one, so that they evaluate each other and themselves. It is intense work, but it usually works if you give it the right importance and the topics to be discussed are problem solving, critical thinking or controversial issues.

You need to recognize what type of learning traits of each student. Are the avoidant, dependent, or competitive? Reach our to your students and help them in the individual learning style the have adapted too.  Make sure you choose the correct type synchronous or achromous style when forming a discussion.

I enjoyed learning about the different online learning styles.

online synchronized learning is different than an in person classroom

Asyncrhonous is better for the OL learning environment.

Providing Feedback

It is best to employ multiple tactics to keep students engaged in asynchronous learning

There are distinct advantages and disadvantages to asynchronous and synchronous learing. Synchronous often benefits fast typers and readers and doesn't work well in larger groups. Asynchronous is more flexible and allows students to be more reflective in their response.

This article describes the differences between synchronous and asynchronous discussion learning and feedback and assessment. When providing feedback with criticism, ensure that it is sent privately by email. For example, Synchronous Sessions are mainly used for chat sessions, and they need to be limited to five to six students, response time can be immediate. On the other hand, Asynchronous Sessions are done with large groups, and response times are typically longer.

synchronous vs asynchronus discussion and what needs to be done to keep people engaged

Asynchronous discussions allow students to post at different times.  They should return to read responses and collaborate with others.

Not to post responses that are too long since then you, as the instructor, aren't engaging effectively with the class
