Getting familiar and learning he content and tools available for the online course will ensure a smooth and pleasant flow for the learners and instructor, while maximizing the learning process.
I learned the importance of structure. The online architecture of the course has to make the progression of ideas and assignments clear, and it must convey the relationship between different parts of the course.
The most difficult challenge for me is engaging asynchronous learners, especially younger students who are uncomfortable interacting with other people. They tend to do all of the assignments early, or all of them at the last minute. During class, they turn of their cameras and mute themselves, or have a game or the internet open for the entire class. They rely on the CMS for instructions, and pay no attention to feedback or the instructor's advice. If they don't see something on their screen, they don't look for it. They email the instructor and expect an immediate reply. 9 times out of 10, the answer is something that I have said, emphasized, and repeated in class. To them, the instructor is an outdated feature of the class, or an adversary who keeps creating problems like class participation and feedback.

It was interesting to know some techniques instructors can use to help students feel supported and like they are not alone in the online learning environment. In my experience some instructors are better at this then others. The use of media when appropriate is also important.
Online learning is something that is somewhat new but is not going away any time soon so it is essential for instructors to become familiar with the platforms that will be used and to continue to stay up to date on new technological advances.

It's essential to know all aspects of the CMS and use the tools to assist learners with navigating the course. Engagement is critical in an online course. For instance, I teach an online Ethics course. I use the Chat tool to engage learners with a weekly ethical question, the response has been positive.
Remote learning support has two major facets - Learning support and Technical support. As defined the class material, the instructor should be able to provide facets. The instructor may not be able to solve some technical issues, however, they should at least know how to direct the student. Secondly, knowing that there may be many roads to the same goal, be cognizant of setting expectations with the students in alignment with the university policy.
