Teaching Medical Terminology in Fun and Exciting Ways --> Using Visual Methods

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

These are good methods to improve learning outcomes.

This section has made me rethink my own interest in medical terminology.  I have been teaching medical term so long that I think even I have lost interest.   Going through this training has reignited my spark and has me eager to see if some of these suggestions work!!  I plan on starting with the match game.

More classroom participation is better and less lecturing fromme is also better.

It is important to incorporate visual and kinesthetic activities into our medical terminology courses to improve student engagement and content retention.

The importance of mental engagement and how to reach the seers (visual) and doers (kinesthetic).  Utilizing various learning methods, including auditory, visual, and kinesthetic approaches, as a quick memory aid to reinforce critical content. Using the nine-box method is something I will use in my teaching.

I do like the idea of some of these activities being incorporated into class.  As a CTE instructor who completed college many years ago, we did not use any of these techniques as part of class, so suggestions are very helpful.

I like the ideas of the games and ways to liven up the dry material. I can remember flash cards of medical terminology prefixes, root words and suffixes. Pretty boring stuff.

I think that adding visual and physical activities would be a great approach to help increase memory retention with medical terms.

These methods seem like they take more time and are not are realistic

I have an idea for a matching game- each student has a term as well as a random definition. The student with the term reads it aloud and there are up to 3 chances for students to read the correct answer.  Students will get points dependening on if they match on the fist try, second or third. This can be kept as a running score and done in many classes.

Adding visual and physical activities will enhance the task of memory for the learners.  I like all of the activities presented and I'm looking forward to using some of them.

I have always believed that we, as educators are always learning! As I constantly tell my team. "The only thing that I know for certain, is that I know nothing at all" ~ Socrates... Learning is something that we do naturally when we speak. See, when we are speaking, we are teaching, but subconsciously we are regurgitating knowledge that we have learned and are reaffirming and in a small way, by re-explaining it, we are ensuring that we comprehend what we are saying! So, this is leading to self-education and education as a whole. I think anyone that educates, understands that we are constantly learning and evolving and improving what we know to share with others that vast knowledge that we have, in hopes that our students or anyone that we come in contact with will take that bit of knowledge and grow into the world! Carpe Diem

Using Visual Methods: Reflection and Application

This module emphasized the value of visual aids, such as diagrams, charts, and videos, in enhancing students' understanding and retention of complex information. Visual methods help clarify abstract concepts, break down processes, and engage different learning styles, making the material more accessible and memorable.

To apply these strategies, I intend to incorporate visuals like flowcharts for medical procedures, labeled anatomy diagrams, and short instructional videos. I’ll also use concept mapping as a collaborative activity, allowing students to visually organize and connect information. This approach will not only improve comprehension but also help students retain knowledge effectively, preparing them for practical application in clinical settings.

It was an interesting course and I learned about a variety of activities that can be incorporated into the class time to make learning more fun, interesting and lively for the students. I plan to utilize some of these games to enhance the memorization and / or learning process.

Drawing medical terms helps that visual learner.

I like the envelope game.  It's easy to organize by breaking the class up into small groups.  It is done to help learn new definitions and terminology.  It engages everyone, tests for accuracy and it's fun because the groups are racing against the clock.

"We may have all the information but it is only effective when delivered with retention"- Lara Manese

This are good technics to remember the information in a simple way.

Excited to try visual notetaking in class.
