Feedback is important for students. This helps determine if objectives and goals were met. Feedback is also important to the instructor and supervisors to help improve programs for future years. Exit interviews would be something I can consider adding to my program next year.

Supervisor roles are teaching, supporting, and managing. Clear guidlines for the supervisor should be provided by the education institution for student success.

Internships should have a student contract. Weekly journals are beneficial to track progress and expectations.

Internships should be 10-12 weeks long for students to get the maximum benefit. Supervisors should immerse the students in real world projects, not just the grunt work. Supervisors should be provided with guidelines for student success

Internships build career skills and give students an opportunity to explore careers. Students are exposed to the real world of their desired career. Internships also afford the student the opportunity for employment after school is completed.

There is no one best teaching style, and teaching should incorporate all the learning styles. Students should not be stuck in one category of learning and should explore all ways of learning.

Good information. It is a good idea for students to assess their learning style, but they need to look at other ways of learning and not get stuck on one way. Offereing different options - lecture, video, hands on gives students different ways to learn and maybe see that they are a multimodal learner, not just one.

After discussing a topic, I usually have a story to go along with it. This reinforces the concept and shows how what we learn aplies to real life. Many times, students have a story (usually about a family member) that may relate to the heathcare topic we are talking about.

Discussion Comment

I think it is important for students to observe others and take notice of correct and incorrect procedures. I have had students observe improper technique and report to me. I have a good working relationship with my clinical facility and I am comfortable talking with the employees and administration when something is out of place. Sometimes students will talk with the staff and explain they learned it differently. I don't think it is wrong to professionally remind someone to wear gloves or wash their hands.

Get to know your students. Students learn differently. Be creative and have a variety of lesson plans or options to meet student learning needs. Offer choices.
