This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Student Learning and Assessment--> Creating Effective Assessments

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

Helpful tips were given for each type of test. There was a good reminder to have another teacher look over the test.

Assessments are tools in which a students comprehension can be analyzed in various ways. Whichever, format a teacher choose should be consistent with the content covered and fair to benefit the student and the teacher.

After writing many test for my students, I found this module to be very useful. I did find it ironic that the quizzes in these modules often violate the suggestions and rules we just learned about.

Assessments should be clear, fair, and varied, avoiding trick questions while promoting critical thinking and understanding.

I learned that different tests have different uses and pros/cons.

Learned the different types of tests and the advantages/disadvantages of all.

From this module, I learned the importance of designing assessments that not only evaluate student learning but also support it throughout the process. Understanding the difference between formative and summative assessments, and how classroom assessment techniques can bridge the gap between theory and application, has been particularly valuable. I also found the focus on active learning meaningful, as it encourages students to apply concepts rather than just memorize them.

I intend to apply this by incorporating more formative assessments and interactive activities in my classroom, such as case-based questions and real-world scenarios, especially in accounting and payroll topics. This will help me continuously monitor student understanding and provide timely feedback, while also preparing them for practical, workplace-related challenges.

testing students will allow you to track their progress.

testing the students allows me to track their academic progress!

The module presented information about creating effective assessments, with many of the problems and benefits of different methods. I recall as a student previously disliking instructors using trick questions or wording problems to mask or obscure the correct answer, sometimes even double negatives in questions, I think applying what I learned I will seek to have questions and assessments that adequately test knowledge while avoiding many of the problems with the various types of assessments.

I learned that assessments should be a wide range of different questions. True and False questions are easy to prepare and grade but because there are only two options, it gives them a 50% chance of guessing it right. True and false questions defeat the purpose of critical thinking because they wouldn't need a deep understanding of the content to guess either answer.

One of the main things I learned from this module is how important it is to design assessments that truly measure student learning. Effective tests should be fair, aligned with learning objectives, and allow students to demonstrate both knowledge and skills.

I also learned that different types of assessments, like objective and subjective tests, serve different purposes, and it’s important to choose the right method based on what you are trying to measure. Writing clear, well structured questions is key to ensuring accuracy and fairness.

Moving forward, I plan to be more intentional in how I create assessments by aligning them with my objectives, using a variety of question types, and making sure my tests are clear, reliable, and meaningful for student learning.

Carefully choose assessments and tests. Tests vary and are appropriate for specific gauges of knowledge and skills (E. Multiple choice assess recall).

I learned that in a fill in the blank the blank should be at the end of the question

Choosing the right testing method is very important when trying to analyze the progression of your students. It also allows you to test objectively.

well first this was very helpful. So now i know a lot more about setting up test

Utilizing the multiple forms of testing to comprehensively assess knowledge and skills is preferable to standardized testing.

Good testing strategies! Understanding the purpose of each strategy is key in assessing students learning.

Multiple choice is most common, but application is important as well
