Rubrics is tool we use to measure the effectiveness of our messages, convey information, measure retention, receive feedback, or communicate expectations. I see them as useful tools to pattern consistency.

Be the model; Lead by example and treat others the way you would like to be treated. I will establish what that means, and live it by example.

As a leader, we establish the rules of engagement, we set expectations. Establishing defined patterns of communication assists us in the process. I'll be a good follower and lead by example. I have experienced poor online communication. It can be challenging because the message is not always clearly what I think it is. Setting clear guidelines in a predictable pattern of communication can make it better defined. 

There are plenty of tools at our disposal for effective teaching online. Some are designed for one purpose, but we may find them useful for another. I will investigate what works best by obtaining formative and summative feedback. I will use the right tool for the right job.

Managing online courses is basically the same as offline. We just need to do adapt to using the techniques required to perform at the same level when teaching online.

I learned that online instruction has a few challenges that must be overcome teach effectively. We basically use the same techniques as in the classroom but cannot convey 80% of the message with our body language. So, we must compensate by being very careful with our choices of words and clear on how we use them. Use of video will be most effective. 

In all teaching formats, the teacher must establish themselves as the leader and take charge of creating a dynamic learning environment. This builds on what we've already learned and gives us information on the techniques we should use to instruct successfully online.

Teaching in an online environment requires much more than subject knowledge and management skills, we need to get to be tech savvy. One needs to learn all aspects of the online training environment from a technical standpoint. Be familiar with the hardware and software applications as needed, so as to answer any questions as required. Also rely on technology to work, when in my experience, it's always going to fail in some way beyond our control. I'm going to be as familiar with the systems as permitted and have IT contacts handily available. 

Online course development is a big deal and can be an effective way to create active learning.
