Students learn in various ways, visual, hearing, reading etc. I will base my instruction on giving them various ways to learn it. Prepare the day before, have a plan and practice.
Incorporate different methods of teaching because everyone learns different. Also, when doing lectures, try to not read word for word. Make it interesting and make each student feel like you're talking to him or her.
As with anyone, it requires a lot of patience and creativity to keep a person's attention. This is why it is so important to convey the love we have for our topic!
students have different learning capabilities, so as a teacher you should learn all the types of learning to engage with your students.
I learned to acknowledge the differences in learning styles. Each student learns differently
I really enjoyed this section and gained a better understanding based on the following facts:
- The attention span of most individuals is in the 15-18 minute range.
- We generally only remember about 25% of what we hear.
- We normally only retain 40% of what we read.
- We can listen 4 times faster than we can speak.
Incorporating different learning styles will help students because everyone learns differently. What works for one student, might not work for another. Therefore, one must learn to create effective lectures for the students.
Class preparation, lesson planning, and delivery needs to address as many learning styles as possible. Practicing one's delivery and getting feedback from peers is essential for fine tuning your content delivery.
Instructors have to be creative in how they deliver education so as to utilize or incorporate all the different learning styles.
Different teaching methods need to be tailored and cover all different methods to have students stay interested and encouraged.
So many teaching methods! Great opportunity for the lecturer to incorporate different techniques to accommodate the different learning styles of the students! It is important to remember that most adults can only recall 5-7 steps; do not overwhelm the students with a demonstration that contains 15 steps. Also, keep lecture points brief. The average adult has the attention span of less than 18 minutes.
By arriving to class early also gives the professor an opportunity to engage with the students in a different light. They will be able to establish better rapport and see how the students interact with one another.
I learned variation in teaching styles.
The attention span of an adult, 15-18 minutes so provide mini lectures lasting 10-15 minutes.
How to prepare your lesson plan.
There are multiple ways to present course content that will be especially helpful in different ways for various types of learners.
I learned how important it is to practice a procedure before the class starts.
Generally speaking, adult learners have an attention span of approximately 15-18 minutes. Therefore, lectures should be composed in such a way as to allow for breaks and variations in teaching style.
In labs, positive reinforcement is always desired, and should serve as a heads up for the next class session, rather than focusing on the negative. The learning experience is progressive.
I will ensure I use a variety of teaching styles/methods to reach the student group. I can utilize demonstrations or group discussions and real life examples to bring the educational material to life.
It is important to vary your teaching styles to reach all students and be interesting. Practice creates more opportunity for expertise
Comment on Justin Markle's post: Teaching and lecture patterns shows the work of teachers who use the best approach to delivering more than one way of teaching. I've never heard of this approach before. Will use it from now on.
