building retention program

the instructor has to have plan as plan a and plan b to solve any retention problem

attention ,retention and stress

stress and attention mainly affecting retention but not all the time is instructor fault ,, we have to choose higher GPA STUDENT for the program ,these students have better attention and retention .

stress

stress has a major rule in students retention you have to help the students to release their stress and to show them that you care about them

retention

students retention is very easy to do if the instructor is dynamic ,simplify the daily topics and to keep students excited all the time . this will come from experience and training in the field .

intelligent heart

There is a hidden center of energy inside us which could open a new door for us to face and to solve our problems. This heart is the center full of powers: power of thinking, power of passion, and power of willing. discovering our hidden heart would be a miracle in our life. To help our students in opening this new door, we should first teach them to believe in themselves, and for making such a belief, we have to learn how to belive in themselves(our students). If we believe that they as human beings have such a hidden center, we could easily bring them up, and let their abilities grow and flourish.

Team work

It is very important to work as a team and maintain good communication to aid in retention. If the whole team is not on the same page we will fail in every area. The whole goal is to communicate and support the faculty in order to feel there is a team.

Motivation is the key

Everyday I take 5 minutes to motivate the class and share some type of positive reinforcement with them. This leads to major productivity.

First day of class

On the first day of class as an ice breaker I have each individual explain about why they chose the medical field and what are there short and long term goals? These are great points to aid in painting a future for motivation.

Leadership

Little things like leadership roles in the class are amazing retention tools. At times even if you have established your leadership roles you can seek out the troubled students and give them some type of role to aid in motivation. I feel the teamwork and leadership roles = outstanding retention.

Treating Student's like customers

Student's are the future of the school, student's further serve as "advertisement" for the institution. Treating student's with the utmost in customer care, creates a positive results in student retention.

Organizational Honesty with the Students

I believe the organization at a college or school must all work together to make the educational experience a successful one for the student. But I believe that at the core of the "Thoughtful Heart" must be total honesty from all of the administrators, staff, and faculty. Admissions must be honest with the students, not try to convince students to enroll in the program with the lowest enrollment this month. Financial aid must be honest with the students about their financial responsibility for any money borrowed, and the faculty must be honest about the jobs available in the career they are preparing the students for. Only when all departments have been totally honest, can an institution be successful and grow.

Teaching Students How to Learn Again

I find that a big part of my classroom time is spent teaching my students how to study and convincing them that they can learn and succeed. So many of them are years out of school, and many did not do well the first time around. To help them learn that they can learn the material, we have weekly exams over one or two chapters at most. This breaks the material into small enough pieces that the students won't get overwhelmed by the amount of material covered. After each exam we review the answers and I counsel the students that struggling most. I praise them when their scores improve, and suggest ways they can improve the quality of their study time. When they realize that they can and do improve as they utilize their time more effectively, they tend to improve markedly. So many people simply don't know that they are capable of learning and succeeding.

on line orientation

I like an idea of having on line orientation. It's hard for everyone to come out for certain time for orientation purpose. usually attendance for physical orientation is never been 100%. student who miss the orientation, they can still able to go on website and obtain all information. It would be win- win situation for students and Institute.

Checking in.

Each student advisor has a group of students they deal with. My suggestion would be to have a guide line number IE. 80% if any of the 4 scored grades drop below that score they should have to see their respective advisor for a "check in " meeting. Find out whats going on, Are they having trouble outside of school? with a particular class Etc. This would show that we care, catch early retention concerns and hope to make them have better overall class scores.

time frame issue

An issue that I have as an instructor is the time frame I have with the student. I have 3 weeks at a time and that is not always sufficeint time to understand a student. I try to connect with them the best i can. I have found in the past that a student's friend or roomate is a good way to get into the students idea of thinking, which helps me to keep the interest of the student with retention problems.

Student retention

Keeping students in class and looking forward is difficult, but if the instructor keeps all the students involved in different sections of the course it keeps there interest, plus a hands on activite seem to keep them interested and returning to class the following day.

Sharing

Be a model that Students can relate to,Dont be afraid to make fun of yourself, i have no problem sharing the dumb things i have done over the years.the students love it all and relate to it.

Role Model

Setting the example for our students. Showing them the way from our mistakes and telling them that you have made the same ones and being truthful with them. We are not better than them, we just have the experience. It does not mean we are above them and they are below us. Just to pass the knowledge we have learned over the years to them so that they can carry on into the future.

School Activities

Our School actually has guest speakers come in often and talk about real life in the careers chosen . Also the Job Placement happens throughout the entire enrollment they are at the school . We are actually able to hire students for work that is conductive to the subject matter taught even as early as the first semester .

School Activities

At our school we plan yearly picnics , even a talent show as well . At first I thought it was kind off silly but students really enjoyed these activities and it turns out the older students were much more receptive than the younger crowds .
