Can anyone share how their Student Mentor program works? Does a Student Mentor work with an individual student or a group of new students?

Retention Power

If you engage each of the students and make your rounds daily, you will see a major difference in retention. I have seen outstanding numbers since I have used this tool. Always give 110%, never give up.

You can never have to much retention

Our school has a very good admissions department, and they do a great fabulous job. There is fairly good follow up during the year, but I feel that there should be more. Reinforcement is the key to retention, and you can never have too much retention D Hayes

making personal connections

A simple "who are you" form is used in my class that gives me some idea of who I have and gives me opportunities to find common ground with my students. I try to pick out the ones who seem to keep to themselves or are having problems and re read their form. Just making simple conversation about something personal to them can change their attitude for the whole class.

changes resulting in drops

We recently changed our books that are used in class and as a result experienced high stress from the sutdents who wanted the books they were origianlly using. They felt unimportant and that we should have asked them before changing books. I believe we lost some trust from not preparing the students in advance for the change. We experienced a high drop number which could have been elimlinated by handling the situation from a student centered approach vs a what's good for the school approach.

Negitive co-workers

I always have a possitive attitude and if someone around me is negitive, I try to point out the possitive in what they say. Or I just tell them " Don't be so negitve". Or "Why are you so negitive" and then they will open up to me and I give them a possitive out look. How would you handle something like this?

EduPreneurial Spirit

Being a teacher requires the ability to react and nurture as a caring individual, while at the same time keeping in mind that school is a business. It is important to approach the students with an educator's stance by being fair, firm, friendly and fun and to complete all administrative requirements within required dealines so the business side of the job is completed efficiently.

Our administration has taken the time to encourage all of the staff to be a part of the mission statement and the ultimate goal of retention. I have found this to be an asset to the entire organization of our school. I know the were met with some resistance at first but i think the exercise has proven to be a positive one for all, especially the student retention. I'm proud to say it was something I had already been doing with my students. It is just second nature to me. But I did find myself being more involved with students that were not mine when I saw the need. And I realize the importance and impact it had on those students.

Improving the EQ should be the goal of any educational system. WE are usually concentrated on IQ. We need to change, and se the whole picture of a human being. We as a human being have a hert and a will power beside our mind, and we should foster all together in our educational system.

Leading by Example

I think that most of us have heard that old saying "Do as I say Not as I do" What's up with that? I feel that if we want a student to behave a certain way, then we must lead by example.
