Putting on your game face.

Each and every morning as I walkk in the door to our institution, I pause, take a breath, then walk into the building with the intention to greet whoever I meet with a positive attitude. And with that greeting, also remind myself to continue this attitude all day. Leave your problems and negative attitude outside the door.

Applicant Qualifications

I think we have a lot of students that don't know what they are signing up for. I have students that tell me they have never owned a screwdriver and now are a year into mechanics school. I have asked why they are here and they just thought it would be fun and not so hard.

Do i need to be involved with student services?

As a new instructor, how much involvement is needed on my part,in working with student services?

Retention

As I get older, I see that each of the students that I think are not taking the course work seriously are doing nothing different then I did at their age. I am becoming more tolerant or understanding of these concerns. First I try to make each student feel that completing something you started is as important as the decision you made to start it in the first place. Education in any area is never a waste of time because you should always take some knowledge skill or life lesson away from the experience. I am beginning to see that focusing on these outcomes capture more interest from the student. I try not to focus on perfection but rather a good experience with the course material. I believe that a lot of the students that left may have left because I thought I cared too much and may have put unrealistic expectations on the students. Every student may not have the same vision of the outcomes or expectations that I have of the material being delivered. I guess we all sooner or later figure out what it is we will do. However, all the life experiences make us what we become.

Standing out from the Group

Students need to be made to feel like they are more than just a number to their school. They want to feel that they have a name, face and story that the faculty/staff know and care about. If they have that feeling they are more likely to get help with their stress and be successful.

Retention is associated with preparation

As a faculty member, I feel it is my responsibility to be sure those students understand the requirements of the course and that they have the skill set to be successful in the course. It can be very frustrating and discouraging for students to feel as if they are in over their head right from the start of the course, so the first week I do a review of content that I know is an expected foundation to be successful in the course. If the students are not adequately prepared for the course, I can pick it up right away and intervene with some tutoring before they get buried in the new content.

mentoring and monitoring is not very easy when you have a large class (3o)back to back with only 15 minutes beetwen each class .it is chaotic .what do you do ?

Mentor

How to be a positive mentor. Listen and respond to students needs in the class room and out of the class room. Everyone has personal issues, but it is very to stay positive.

GOALS REQUIRE FOCUS

After looking at the overall goal of student retention, I believe goal is the key word. If in the recruitment / enrollment process the importance of goals and achieving your goals was made clear to the student they would focus more on their goal of being successful and therefore, not finishing their program would not even be an option.

I am not in admissions, but I do believe that the more time one spends and and projects knowledge upon a prospective student the more success there will be for both sides

improving the classroom with adult leaners

as an instructor you'll see what kind of class you have ,once started a new class you can separate the young learner and the adult leaner have a mix of both young and old work togethere the class projects will benefit from this experiance

Modeling is a big part of having a great attitude

I find that I have a great attitude toward my job as Instructor, which reflects on my personality, therefore I am in a good mood when I get to work which also I think filters to the students. this make the day starting out very positive for both myself and the students

negativity and retention

There have been quite a few students nearing the end of their learning at our school that have some how grown a great negativity towards the school. They tend to show this to new students and it grows like wildfire. Everyone needs to work as a team to target these problems early on and to help aid these students with there issues. If this happens, we can enforce a more positive environment for the students and increase retention

you must keep the subjects that you are teaching interesting for ALL your students. you should never talk down to them. you shoud make them want to come to class the next day.(whats next?)

I have learned that my classroom demeanor has a major impact on retention. Getting students involved to place them in their comfort zone is critical.

Who is responsible

I wonder who is responsible of the retention ? I think everybody as a team player is responsible and have to be accountable for this processs. sometimes when the student come to cancel registration, persuasion is not enough.
