Managing conflict

I have found especially in group projects that there can be an overload of conflict between students. Recognizing each group member's gifts and talents can create a much more harmonious project group

Picture, Bio, and regular announcements

Having a little background on one'sself gets people realizing that this builds relationships in the classroom. I have found as well when I get my students excited about the next week it creates good synergy for the rest of the week

Threaded Discussions

Threaded discussions are the life blood in any asyncrhonous environment. I have found if you can encourage student participation early in the week it can have a huge impact

Managing Conflict Online

I am your classic middle child/only girl in the family. I try really hard to avoid conflict at all costs. Do you have a tried and true method for helping deescalate conflicting in the quickest manner possible? Any advice is appreciated.

Synchronous Chats

One of the things covered in this module was having synchronous chats occur one on one. What if I am not afforded that luxury and it is required that I do class wide synchronous chats? Is there a way to make them more interactive and more personal? Also, is there a way to encourage avoidant/dependent students to participate in the classroom discussions/chats? Is there some sort of "tangible" incentive that can be used? Ideas are welcome!

Projecting Your Presence

I know that I posted information in the last forum on technologies that help in the online classroom. I have a good idea for a bio maker. Try using prezi.com or jing (screencast.com). These are great tools to make your bio more interactive. I'd highly suggest trying it.

Online Teaching Tools

I've worked almost exclusively in online higher education. I am pretty familiar with the technology and ideas behind them. I'd like to share a few programs with you that are helpful to me in the online environment: Jing Animoto Edutopia.org These are helpful to me...and I think the they will be to you too.

Closing the Loop

Closing the loop provides a way to evaulate online courses and to make imporvements as needed.

Feedback

Feedback is important to help the student assess their learning throughout the course of online teaching.

Syllabus

Creating a dynamic syllabus is important to online learning as it directs the student on where to go during the course and can be changed and updated as the course progresses.

Online learning

Developing an online database is important as a resource to use during the course and saves time.

Student attrition

Quiet students need to be monitored because they have the potential to drop out of the class and not participate in class discussions.

Online participation

It is important to make sure that all students participate in online discussions. The job of the instructor is to reach out to students that are not comfortable in participating.

Online learning

A good way to keep the students involved in online learning courses is to encourage them to stay in touch by posting virtual office hours.

Online preparation

It is important to make sure that the students have the course goals and know how to access the materials online.

Formative v. Summative

I'm a big fan of formative assessment: it allows the teacher to better understand students' progress before quizzes and examinations. Also, it is critical for students in that it gives them road markers to see what their progress is and what they need to practice more. Formative methods are endless: the teacher may be creative in finding new ways to constantly assess students at all stages of learning.

Method of feedback

It is critical to match feedback methods to the nature of the assignment. Discussion Boards demand a much different approach to feedback than do individual assignments. Different formats, such as with a PowerPoint project, will also require different feedback (comments on the layout/format of the file in addition to writing skills and task completion).

Syllabi

I've noticed that with online environments, the syllabus needs to be even more detailed than in a traditional classroom. The idea is that it is difficult to have a real-time discussion (when ALL students are present) to address questions and concerns. The more time and detail that goes into an online syllabus, the less confusion there will be on the part of the students.

Online v. Ground

Having many years of experience teaching both online and ground courses, I see that the teaching methods are very different: in an online environment, students receive information in very different ways. The teacher must keep these in mind when designing the course so as to ensure that the same learning outcomes will unfold as with a traditional course.

Transition from classroom to online instruction

I am thinking about transitioning from classroom teaching to online instruction. What are the main challenges in transferring the knowledge to students if you can't gauge their level of comprehension?
