Active learning

Several strong ideas for active learning strategies in this course.

Should recorded sessions be made available to students? Would it hinder attendance? Should recorded sessions only be provided with exceptional reasons?

Cameras on in Zoom?

With the proliferation of Zoom live instruction, should students always have their cameras on during sessions?

Group Size in Synchronous Learning

Does anyone have any recommendations on the optimal group size for a synchronous on-line learning environment? Big enough where there is meaningful interaction, but not so big where learners can just check out without being noticed.

Discussion Group Participation

How do other instructors encourage and manage discussion groups to help ensure that even natural introverts, or students with busy schedules, take the time to participate in the group and provide, at least occasional, thoughtful input to the discussion?

Teaching as a Second Job - How Do You Manage it?

I am interested in hearing from others who teach, either online or in traditional setting, as a second gig. Specifically, how do you budget your time between your "day job" and your teaching job. I am a busy lawyer, and it is difficult to stay on top of what I need to manage for students, especially feedback and grading. All thoughts and comments are welcome.

Last Minute Turning in Assignments

How to convince a student that the best way of success is to keep current with assignments and syllabus.  Last minute turning in assignments and cramming is good for short term, but the goal should be for consistiency.

New learners

How to give technical support if instructor does not know that

Instructors have limited knowledge on computer technology, sometimes that also a difficulty in teaching online.

online learning

For students to participate, curriculum needs to be adjusted to different learning styles.

When students are misleading themselves?

What do you mean by "When students are misleading themselves" What's an example? Do you mean mean when they are making mistakes in reasoning?

Do you mean they are not thinking the way the instructor is telling them to think about a complex problem?  If so, this is problematic. What about the role of creativity?

Extraneous Cognitive Load?

What does Extraneous Cognitive Load? Mean? Also, you need a better word for "chunking."

Too Much Emphasis?

What does "too much emphasis is no emphasis at all" mean? This seems obfuscatory and contradictory.
