Continuous Development

As a new instructor, I found ED101 to be informative and educational. The course clarifies the importance of continued development of the instructor, a process which is ongoing and should not be considered as “finished” when one feels that they have reached an certain level of development. Would anyone else agree that the instructor must continually strive to develop and improve upon the competencies (both professional and personal) which are in required for educating? Clifton

NEW TEACHER, LOTS OF WORK EXPERIENCE

As a new instructor, I am finding that my work experience is valuable as a teaching tool, that I am able to incorporate real life situations I experienced in the field which i am teaching, and this keeps the lecture (which I am not used to giving) interesting and the students, hopefully, are able to put together what is being lectured and what really happens in the career they are studying. I think this will be a great tool for me to use until my lecture skills become better.

Learning Styles

An instructor should know the learning styles of the adult student population, to keep the students interested and engaged in class participation. With an adult class, there will be varieties of student ages, and with that, their individual learning styles. Knowing this information, the instructor should deliver a variety of learning styles to accommodate every student in class

Philosophy of our school

We explainin our school that resources are used in recruitment but more are used in retainment once you are here. Our practice lab is a place were any student can come and practice a skill with no shame or blame connected to it.I believe that Aristole stated " Those who know, do. Those who understand, teach.

Student with english as the learning language.

It will be challenging to have student with ELL. we should come up with easy examples to make them understand better before we move on to another subject.

Reasons for Studnet Monitoring

We have to pay attention to students from the time to start the class lecture until the end..that way we prevent them from major problems..by helping them to understand what we lucture..and give them examples from our own experiances to catching their eyes and be interested to the subject.

developing a syllabus

along with the five bullets that were on the front page we train and teach Culinary so a sense of urgency must be added. The urgency of our product ( a meal ) has to be taken into account. Time is either our friend or our enemy.

CATs are good

I think that CATs are a great teaching aid to assist in the learning process. Every little bit counts, and breaking up the class format is helpful in stimulating students minds.

Questions can be intimidating

Sometimes questions, both from the receiving end and the asking end, can be intimidating. encourage students to feel comfortable coming and asking questions, but also don't feel as though you have to make up an answer if a student asks you something you don't firmly know the answer to. i agree with the informational policy of admitting you dont know the answer, but will research and find out.

Visual Learning!

I, myself, am definitely a visual learner. I found that in class students having some trouble with conversions could benefit from the visual breakdown that I have used along the way to help me in my studies. I presented the mathematical content, followed by the visual, as well as some hands on demos and it seemed effective in touching base with the class on the whole.

The Solid Citizens

This concept really made me think, to often (especially in an accelerated program); the "B" Players do just go along with the flow. The Star performers are being validated with good performance on testing, etc. The at-risk students are getting extra attention with tutoring or special help, but the mainstream players receive no special recognition or attention. Any creative ideas on how to acknowledge the performances of average students?

Learning styles

I have found that dealing with older students often becomes a problem due to knowledge lack of current technology, being away from an educational environment, and current class pace. Often I will peer younger students with older students to insure that the knowledge give will be reinforced from another person's perspective so older students will understand better.

Visual Learning

In class just the other day, I noticed that some students were having trouble understanding a topic we were covering. I realized that I could re-format the material and present it in a visual way in order to really show them two different methods of putting it all together. I found this to be really helpful, and will adjust other lessons accordingly in the future.

Safety: sequence of events

In a laboratory environment, proper "pre-lab" student training and preparation is absolutly essential.

Setting Career and Personal goals

Improving ones self acts as a motivator for ones students.

Engaging the students

bring them in not by collective bargining, you give me this and I give you that but by finding a common ground or interest and going from their.

Be prepared

lesson planning can seem relatively easy, but it is important to be prepared for class each day. you never know which questions students will ask!

First day nerves

Many students are anxious and nervous on the first day of class, and especially on test days. these points help to lower the tension of the atmosphere and ensure a healthy start to the course.

Developing Syllabi

great model and guide for how to structure syllabi.
