We should model the behaviors we expect to see in our students, mentor, and monitor by checking up on them periodically. This has been shown to increase retention.
Students thrive when they are given extra attention.
Reaching out to students has gone a long way with a task that is so small and simple. For students I notice who are absent or did not do well on an assignment, I like to email them and ask them if everything is ok or if there's anything I can do to support them. Often times the student is very gracious for the email, will show up more often in class, and will put in extra effort because they want to reflect the care in their work that they feel was extended to them.
Having expectations for the students and being consistent with the expectations will help them learn certain skills that will make them successful. We also need to be modeling these same expectations to set the example for them. Another thing would be to have the students come up with expectations for us as an instructor.
One of the most important parts of the job is practicing what you preach. People emulate what you do more than what you say. Another important part of the job is being attentive to the students and checking in, showing you care and fostering a relationship with them. When students feel seen, cared for and like they belong they will work harder and communicate more which in turn with assure they make it to graduation.
I thinnk it's a good model to create an environment where they feel motivated, supported, and capable of succeeding
Educators can boost student success by modeling professional behaviours.
Connecting this to my position, monitoring students means holding them accountable. We also have to be checking in with them so they can reach their goals.
It is very important that students feel they have sincere support throughout their academic process, which generate confidence, stability and comfort.
It's good to model for students what the expectations of the class are. Students need to feel like someone is cheering them on or steering them in the right direction. Mentorship is important during this period of their lives.
If we are modeling, mentoring, and monitoring for our students every day, then we are coaching them toward success. All school employees need to see themselves as a model, mentor, and monitor with an intelligent heart, all working together to graduate every single student.
In listening to this module which includes a Model, Mentor, and Monitor- each M adds an opportunity to be successful in post-secondary education. I specialize in all three. I share with my students that if you want to be somebody, if you want your career goals to take off with a mindset to graduate, then we must make it our best attempt to Model those sources, learn with a Mentor, and Monitor your progress. With this said, students open themselves to start strong and finish strong!
The 3 M's must be applied in a consistent day-to-day contact with students. Students want to interact with role models. Repetition is critical as each student has a different process of learning. The 3M's must work together.
A key to success is to model what we preach.
Students have to feel a sense of belonging to be fully engaged in the learning process.
I think meeting students at their level is very important in both academics and social-emotional readiness and development. Everyone is not at the same level so differentiating in the ways we approach and care for students will look differently.
I learned that listening and encouraging our students will help them be more successful and accountable.
Students need to be seen as an individual to thrive
Important to listen to your students
