In the institution we are all retention.
This is a new dimension for me as an admissions rep but the material is goood and is presented to make us better at serving the students
Students are our clients and primary reason why we are here as educators in various fields. Basic thing for me is Respect everyone. Nobody is above anybody and we are all growing and learning. We were students before we became educators. However, I believe also in boundaries and empathy to guide someone to achieve their goal.
mentoring is very rewarding
It is important to let them know you will monitor and follow up with each student so they know you stand by your word. It lets them know you are supporting them and are there to help them
Understanding how to coach for success is a case by case with each individual student. I find it is important to get to know each student individually in order to gain their attention for retention. This section offered good advise for promoting the 3'Ms.
Modeling, mentoring, and monitoring are great tools that reinforce the previous and continue the process of mentor-student relations.
It is important to pay attention to your students as it shows them they are important, increasing their chance of remaining in the program.
Self fulfilling prophesy- Some students need a bit more of encouragement and motivation. however, if they believe (this belief can be inspired by the staff), they will achieve, resulting in higher retention.
When you deal with your students, you must speak their language. Say it in a way that you can be understood. If you have to say it 3x, then do it.
Be compassionate to the needs of your students.
We have the opportunity to enrich our students education by showing that we care about their success. As eductators, we can motivate our students by engaing with them and providing support and encouragment.
Positivity is Powerful!! Engage with the students, let them know that as difficult as it may seem right now, the outcome will be worth it. Always encourage and strengthen their resolve to improve and grow.
The importance of encouraging students to stay motivated by becoming relatable with them.
I totally agree with getting to know your students well before they begin the program so that the trust is there. Also, it is very important to share your past experiences as a college student and how you were able to meet new friends to study with and feel more comfortable along this journey. Once the students see that you all genuinely care then they will be more apt to follow your lead and be successfull. It takes the entire school and not just one specific department.
I learned about the 3Ms strategy of modeling, mentoring, and monitoring. Also, self-efficacy is a powerful tool in student success. When faculty share personal stories of their academic success and what struggles they experienced, along with peer mentoring programs, students will see that struggles are a part of the journey, but success is at the end of that journey.
It is essential to listen to a student and provide a holistic approach because students also have other roles outside of just being students. Following-up with them and checking in based on your conversation and touching on key points in the next meeting is also important and shows that they are being heard.
Working with other departments and faculty members helps distribute the weight of caring for the students so i dont have to carry the burden alone.
Its important to acknowledge student and let them know they are doing good.l
