It is important to include my current classroom skills to my new online skills. It's important to show my authority in a positive way to build a positive relationship with my students
It was interesting learning classroom strategies to keep students engaged. I found the suggestion to email schedule reminders one that I will begin to incorporate. I do post a short bio of myself, but appreciated the suggestion of having the students provide a brief bio. Knowing the student better will be beneficial with establishing trust and a relationship with each student.
I have a biography and a current photo of myself uploaded. I make myself availabe daily to students - 7 days a week.
That you can build trust in your students by sharing your educational background with your professional experiences and achievements.
Establishing an online presence is a major factor when it comes to e learning. A quick trunaround time is needed for students to feel supported. Clear communication is key with e learning.
Establishing relationships promotes an enriched and meaningful learning experience for the e-learner. Effective e-learning communities are built upon trust, respect, and consideration. Effective building strategies for the instructor includes identifying special needs of each student, considering time zone differences when posting assignments, and encouraging face toface meetings if feasible. These strategies will be used to formulate a postive learning environment so each student may have a dynamic learning experience.
Students need to see teachers a real humans. We need to introduce ourself to develop relationships just as we would in face to face classrooms. Online classes are to influence, persuade, inspire and energize studetns just as face to face classes do.
Adding a little biograph about the instructor let the student know of who the instructor is and by doing the same with the student, the class becomes a community and students could relate to each other interest/goals.
In the online classroom, I am able to project my presence by
1). Sending out a welcome letter before the course begins
2). Making weekly course overview announcements (what to expect, due dates, my contact info)
3). Posting a biography including both proefssional and personal accomplishments.
4). Be the first to post in the student lounge, encouraging further discussion.
5). Answer all questions on the Q&A board/email within 24 hours
6). Hold a synchronous teams meeting in the beginning, middle, and at the end of the course to interact with students in "real time"
7). Provide detail, formative feedback on each assignment
8). Actively engage in the discussion board 4-5 days per week to increase involvement and peer interaction
The introduction with a bio is a good idea so the student will have an idea of the instcritors exoperince and hobbies.
I have learned that in addition to the instructor postinh his/her bio it is also important for the students to post their bios. This way the instructor and other student csn get to know one another.
I have learned the importance of the instructor posting his/her biographical information
to establish for the students instructor compentence and experise
Getting to know students and their background are important. Letting them know who you are is also important to project expectations throughout the classroom. Setting up forums for coursework discussions and general discussion both synchroniously and asynchronously are other ways to keep students motivated, engaged, and inspired during the course.
Developing positive and optimistic relationships is a worthwhile goal to have when establishing a presence. An effective educator communicates a genuine belief that all students are capable of growth and learning.
Relationship-building skills always begin with the critical skill of listening.
Posting a short biography of an instructor is very important as well as student posting a short biography of themselves on Day 1. This is a very good start on day 1 and also post your expections from them and ask students what are their expections from you.
I learned you can assume anything on-line when developing relationships with your students. Sharing yourself on ground is very differnet than sharing online.
Focus less on what I know (my credentials) and more on what I have done (how I have applied that knowledge in the field)
Students need to have a sense that their instructor is engaged and accessible.
The takeaways for this module include the need for the instructor to ‘project’ their presence since the interactions are different in the online environment. These include the need to lead and facilitate the discussions and ensure timely responses. The weekly announcements and reminders are helpful ways to accomplish this in addition to regular participation in the various assignments and participation requirements. I also think posting a good bio in the introduction board, or whatever the LMS calls the forum, that includes academic credential, professional credentials, as well as something on hobbies and other outside the classroom interests. Finding common ground with the students at the beginning of the course is always helpful to establish a positive relationship.
In this section, I have learned how important it is to make a connections with my student, and how it is just as important for them to get to know me. I will definitely start incoorporating bios in my classes.
