Communications is everything.  It's especially important to use with those that are not putting themselves out there.  With all types of students, sending them an email lets them know you see what they are or are not doing.  It keeps you present.

Very interesting to see the different learning styles online are the ones I see in the classroom.  Discussion boards are a great way to keep students engaged and seeing other points of view.

As an instructor you need to make clear and maintain the expectation and rules of online just as if they were in class physically.  But, you also need to bring the human side to it.  To post a "tell me about yourself" not only shows how we are all from different areas and backgrounds, it shows just how much we may have in common as well.  Students are also more likely to ask for help with something if they feel comfortable and connected.

If I don't know how to use the online platform, how do I expect my students to know?  That's what I keep coming back to.  This module gave me some ideas and to maybe make a list for myself as to which areas I need to make sure I understand.  That way I for one, know my way around instead of fumbling through, and two, I can help my students when they get stuck.
