On the first day of class the students should be greeted for their comfort. They must have a proper syllabus explaining course goals and expectations. It is essential to inspire students with encouragement. Try to open a dialogue with a simple pre-test about their goals.
Personalization and getting to know students benefits both you and them. It will make you more appraochable and enable you to get to know your students better to better help them later.

I learned that it is important to set the tone and expectations for the course so the students are clear about what is expected and how they will be graded.
