Instructional Planning for Student Success --> Creating an Evaluation System
Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.
You need to use the rubrics....and use them fully. Modern students will not let you just circle and 86% on the top of the paper and move on. They...and you...need to be able to defend a score.
From this module, I learned the value of using the total-points method of evaluation because it creates a balanced grading system that clearly shows students where to focus their efforts and prevents any single assignment from disproportionately harming their final grade. I also learned how important it is to regularly “troubleshoot” my grading methods to ensure fairness, accuracy, and transparency. Keeping the grade book current and having other educators review my system can help me avoid common pitfalls and better support students who want to understand their progress. Moving forward, I plan to apply these practices to make my grading more consistent, student-friendly, and reflective of the actual work students put into the course.
A fair and balanced grading system.
I have a digital grading process which seems to work well. I update grades on Sundays so they stay current. My admin has never asked about the grading but I assume they will be good with it.
grading should be commiserate with the work done and distributed fairly across the whole point system to indicate that. Ongoing feedback and evaluations and grading done in a timely manner allow the student the opportunity to be on target with knowing how well they are doing and work on areas that need more diligence
implementing grades that are commensurate with the testing activity and keeping an actual paper grade book for reference for student grades.
A fair and balanced evaluation system supports both accountability and growth.
I ensure that my grading is complete within 2 days of the assignment date. This lets my students know that they matter to me.
One of the most challenging tasks you will face as an instructor is how to set up an evaluation system that will allow you to accurately assess the progress your students are making. As an instructor your responsibility to assess your students is great, because your students are learning knowledge and skills they will be using in their career field.
Students should rely on feedback from grading. Therefore, graded work needs to be returned to the student within 48 hours along with notes or explanations of docked points. Marking an algebra solution as wrong and awarding no points isn't nearly as insightful as identifying what the specific error was (arithmetic mistake vs. algebraic mistake) and awarding partial credit. For example, a student could make a minor error such as losing track of a negative sign or making an error in addition (2+3=6), but demonstrate a strong understanding of the algebra concepts being assessed. Not all mistakes are created equal.
I'll have the grades done within 48 hours.
Avoid conflict with simple reporting.
Make your policies clear, go over syllabus.
I will stick with and trust my grading system. From this course I learned that students, and at times administration will question it, but is will stick with it. I will also reward extra credit to the students that wants to do special projects.
As a new teacher, many students usually ask have you post my grade yet? I think keeping an updated gradebook is important because students like to keep track.
Students must be aware that there will be an opportunity to share their retention of the material. Don't let the medium be the test. Let the student's retention of material be measured in the best way for the student.
I think feedback is an important step in evaluations. It allows students to understand what they are doing well and how they can make improvements on their assignments.
As a new instructor, a great tip that I learned is that by providing students to a variety of ways of earning points will students to show the knowledge they have learned so far in different ways.
Keeping an updated gradebook is important because students are interested in knowing where they stand in the class.
