Compliance is important, regulations create a fair honest and ethical environment for students

The right of every student to know accurate information regarding the institution they are attending.  What funding is available, what are course objectives. Understanding what can happen if information is not accurate regarding fines.  That there are numerous programs, laws and legislation regarding schools.

Information should be accurate and not misleading.

Be honest with potential and current students, watch the wording of the materials used in advertising and contracts. Dont break the rule or there may be a hefty $42K fine!

Why are the students in your class? What is their motivation? Use this information to help enhance their learning and maintain retention. What is a Career Education Student? understanding how they wish to bring life experiences into the learning process.

Reinforcement is very important- I use a colorful cone.  When I throw random review questions out that are tougher and a student answers it, I give that student the "cone of knowledge" their job now is to pass it on to another student if that student suprises them with a tough answer.  This not only creates "surprise" but also rewards… >>>

Cognition and tactile experience enhance student retention of materials.  "Learnativity" Learning is a process and not everyone is going to learn and retain in the same way.  The brain likes novelty and gets frustrated if the stimulus is not stimulating.  There is emotional as well as working memory types and it is important to take both into consideration.

Set the stage.  Everything from the classroom itself to the students' individual styles, to me as the facilitator of learning matters.

Be positive and enthusiastic about what you teach, get to know the students, students need our support.  The human factor is a big key in retaining students.  Dont dictate your classroom.  "ask dont tell"

Goal setting from the beginning is very important.

I learned that there are many motivations for students to continue in education, and why they may choose to quit.  I learned we as instructors play a significant role in the success of the students, by understanding the student motivations as well as understanding the student as an individual learner.  Identify each student and teach to those needs.  Students have intrinsic motivation and extrinsic.  Know what we can help with and when we need to refer to another.

Personally, I love this.  I have done different colored tests in a large classroom of students, but that was because the tests were actually different.  I like the idea of handing out other assignments in this way and plan to do it in my next class.

Be fair and balanced in grading percentages.  Give up to date accurate feedback regarding grades. Watch usage of extra credit. Evaluate and make adjustments as needed.
