Just-in-Time Teaching | Origin: ED129

This is a general discussion forum for the following learning topic:

Practical Applications for the Flipped Classroom --> Just-in-Time Teaching

Post what you've learned about this topic and how you intend to apply it. Feel free to post questions and comments too.

I learned that JITT can allow students to prep themselves before any F2F activities that can help them prepare for the lesson to be learned.

Just in time teaching provides effective ways to review and preview material for better info retention. It helps learners address problems as they arise and refresh their skills when needed. It also gives hesitant learners a chance to explore objectives and feel more confident working in groups.

Just-in-time is a more efficient approach than traditional teaching.

Just in time teaching proves to show better routes of review and preview for full retention of concepts.

I didn't know how important immediacy was, or even what it was until now. Immediacy is a perception of physical or psychological closeness. When considering teacher immediacy, behaviors that convey teacher warmth, positive relations, and availability for communication are typically the top three things people think about.

Just-in-time learning allows learners to tackle problems on the spot. It's a great way of refreshing skills and steps.

I find an active learning environment like JiTT more stimulating, this approach allows for intentional learner participation. Students who are reluctant to respond individually will do so in a group setting.  Because JiTT fosters collaborative learning environment learners become eager to learn and express what they have already learned. Again, the pre-planning collaboration gives reluctant leaners the chance to pre-plan and explore the learning objectives without fearing the unknown in a group.

In the past I have used pre class questions to get the most out of students in lecture. In accelerated programs time is of the essence and the more quality discussion we have in class the better the outcome.

Flipped classroom can be used as a segment of topics covered within the traditional classroom. For example, learning new software could be done with online lectures and students work together in class in their spare time, almost like an online class but with an important collective working aspect.

Just in Time Teaching links out of class and in class activities - a learning bridge.

While I don't completely understand the JiTT concept, I think I already use something similar or maybe similar to a "flipped classroom," The students have a manual and are required to complete the book work prior to the F2F; it has to be done to enter the classroom. I think many of my students likely do the work just before they want to attend the class session while others may do it ahead of time. One issue is what is included in the manual may not be what is covered in class. I think I need to find a way to intergrate them better.

I’ve learned that the flipped classroom requires careful planning, flexibility, and tackling misconceptions to make it effective. I like how pre-class assessments can highlight areas where students need more focus, allowing me to spend less time on concepts they’ve already mastered. This would help me use in-class time more efficiently for targeted discussions and activities.

I really  like the idea of having the students watch the recorded lecture and then come to class with 3 things they learned and 1 muddy point.  We use a ticket to class that they are encouraged to complete while watching the recorded lecture but we can not make it a requirement so of course some students do not complete the TTC. Maybe having them identify 3 things they have learned might have greater compliance and having them identify a topic they could use more explanation on benefits them.

I think a lot of students could do so much better if only they had a little more time. I this JiTT can help make the necessary adjustments to find the right time for students there could be much more success.

I was unfamiliar with JiTT, and also with the phrase "teacher immediacy"

Hello! I will keep two ideas that I found remarkable in this second module. On the one hand, the planning of synchronous activities based on previous trigger questions, which can be useful both to test previous knowledge and to motivate the need to engage with the contents. On the other hand, the idea of modified lectures with different variables, I think it can be an interesting way to develop a traditional practice in an innovative way. Greetings from Cordoba, Argentina!

I like the just-in-time teaching model. I like the flexibility it offers while making the student the center focus. Implementing the active learning concepts would be manageable and effective in the classroom. Implementing this model will enhance the students' learning and increase their engagement.

Sounds like the jitt is A great way to save time and get a good view of student understanding before the f2f class starts. I know that in my experience if you put in the time at first to built your class it will pay off in the end.

I learned that there are several myths about the flipped classroom, including preparation time, teacher compatibility, and student acceptance. If the instructor spends the time using the flipped classroom correctly, the students will benefit.
