Retention Tools

This is a great module and many institution should include retention meeting and convey what are the retention tools available for new instructors

Intervention strategies

I thought surveying method was very helpful in getting a student to identify what the problem is and figuring out what they can do to resolve or at least address it for the moment.

Stress

Learned alot about students and stress. As an instructor, you never really think students are stressed out even when you walk them through the material step by step.

Retention

This is a very good course and addresses the challenges of quality vs. retension instructors face everyday. In the end, I have to ensure the quality of the course is not compromised because students will begin to expect more of themselves in the end.

Setting the stage of learning

The best classes are those in which it is understood that learning is to take place.. The environment is conducive to learning. This starts with the way the class is designed, the teacher's preparation, and most importantly the teacher's attitude! If we approach our students as though they want to learn, most will rise to the occasion. By signing up for their programs, the student has at least vocally said "I want to learn" so we should give them what they signed up for! On the other hand, if we walk in with a jaded idea that our students should not be here, do not have the maturity, capability, or desire to learn, then we unconsciously support the behaviors that make it so.

The layout of the school is the first step in promoting Unity

One thing that our school has done has been to change buildings. Our old campus was full of narrow winding halls where students could "hide out" and we did not really have a central location. Our new building has a great central gathering area that is right in the middle of the school. This adds to the sense of community. Also, we made our faculty area more accessible so that students could locate them between classes. We have also started "galleries" down the hallways so that both teachers and students can display their artwork.

Retention is based on relstionships

Many returning students feel unsure and afraid of failing. If we help develop relationships to support students, it will be less likely that a student will quit by surprise. Someone will get to the student before matters get worse. Great information was provided to help get a program started thank you.

PROVIDE INPUT

TOO OFTEN WE WANT TO SOLVE OUR STUDENTS' PROBLEMS. WE FEEL HELPLESS WHEN WE DO OUR BEST AND THE STUDENTS CONTNUES A DOWNWARD SPIRAL. WE LEARN THAT WE CAN LISTEN, SUGGEST AND ADVISE BUT WE CANNOT SOLVE ALL PROBLEMS. I LIKE THE IDEA OF BEING A SOUNDING BOARD FOR OUR STUDENTS. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS MODULE. I WOULD LIKE TO TEACH MY STUDENTS THIS INFORMATION.

STRESS IS A PEST

If we could manage stress how great life would be. It isn't so much the things that happen to us that do us in.... no... it is our reaction to the stressor. Now at 55 I can get this. How do we get through to our students and kids that we have the magic answer and get heard? Good luck to all my fellow teachers. Let's go in there and share our pearls of wisdom. We learned that, "Stress promotes thoughts driven by how many resource reserves remain for coping. The greater and more prolonged the stress, the fewer reserves remain, and the greater the psychological pressure to escape. Academic Erosion (feeling unimportant) and Academic Stagnation (feeling dead-ended) are the strongest specific influences on attrition, and their effect is increased or decreased by the perceived level of School Commitment. I BELIEVE THAT WE ARE A GREAT RESOURCE. GOOD TEACHING!!!

retention

Students need to feel that the instructor cares about whether they master the material or not. They also need to see that what they are learning has value to their educational process.

Retain Students

We speak of retaining as if we could do more than motivate the unmotivated, incourage the discouraged, instruct the unknowing and guide the academically lost. We are teachers and that is what we do - help keep our students hooked on knowledge. Lest we forget our passion.

Special Accommodations

Retention issues can also include students with special accommodation needs(in particular incoming new students to my online classes with special accommodation needs -- ADD, dyslexia, sometimes visual or hearing impairments, etc.) who may have needs that affect their learning. My experience has been that often these students are uninformed about how/where to connect with college resources to assist them. Sometimes, midway or later into the course material, they share in an email about their struggles and apologize, wondering what they can do to improve their coursework.

What are online faculty doing to encourage retention?

I work at an online school, and I am interested in how online faculty feel they contribute to retention.

Retention issues

One of the topics not addressed specifically with more input in our RT-101 course, was the retention issues of students with special accommodations needed.  (And whether, given FERPA, faculty would be allowed that insight, etc.)  In the past,  (I teach online courses) I've had students who explain their efforts to work with dyslexia, hearing impairments, visual needs, Attention Deficit Disorders, and other needs.  Often, this information from the students comes later in the class, after they are at risk and facing the all too familiar stressors that lead to their academic erosion and stagnation.  Typically, especially if newer students to college, they are not familiar with what resources are available to them.

Intelligent Heart

I understand the concept of intelligent heart but to maintain that intelligent heart everyday is a real challenge for me. This will be my new personal goal for the new year is to maintain a intelligent heart for my students.

Working as a Team

In organizations such as career colleges, we are all part of a unified team, it takes all departments within our organization to achieve the common goal of not only our company success but for our students success. Without all of us acting as a team our system and environment will fall apart and students will never reach the goals they have set for themselves, and we would not be able to help them see their vision and help them reach it.

Learn To Teach

To help students become motivated in their learning and educational experience we need to assure ourselves first that every individual within the entity of an institution inspire and motivate our students not to just listen to a lesson or orientation but to be a participant as well. We need to make sure we are teaching with the aspiration that not all students have the same learning style's and that we focus on all types of learning styles and abilities for student retention and success in their chosen career's.That in turn determines success and goal setting, along with retention.

Power of Vision

I firmly believe that we as Instructors play such an important roll in helping our students create a vision and then helping them achieve that vision, some students we have to give more encouragement too in order to help them see that the vision they have is a "realization for Their Success", and that makes our jobs as Instructors so vitally important. Our students count on us. How we perceive their "vision" is not as important as how we help them reach it!!Then we are successful and so are our students.

Accountability

I am a firm believer that when we hold our students accountable they are more receptive to their goals they have set for themselves because they know we have also set high goals for their success.

Team Work Always Works

Having a solid foundation in the business/school mission is very important. Having positive and active players is very important also. You want to make sure to have an open line of communication to ensure that everyone is on the same path.
