Teaching Students How to Cope with Stress

I am an English instructor and am in the process of rewriting my lesson plans for my Fundamentals of English class, which is a developmental writing course that most of our students take early on. I already began incorporating study skills in this class by having the students take an online assessment that shows them in which areas their study skills need improvement. Then we read some material about improving. Finally, each student writes about how he/she can improve. Are there any resources for teaching students how to cope with stress? I'd like to add this in to my course. Thanks, Leslie

retention Program

Communicating is extremely important between staff/faculty and students to retain retention.

Intervention

Intervention is important and understanding the differences in every student.

Attrition

Attrition is very important and GAS awareness

Retention

This helped me understand retention better.

How often do we hear about persistence and completion rate?

The knowledge of the persistence rate is limited when one speaks of completion rate. The completion rate is highly spoken of with data to back up its claim.

The importance of communicating

When situations are communicated immediately, the effectiveness of problem solving will not be as diffcult to find a solution.

Why is it so difficult to reach at risk students?

As stated, many of them deals with pride and some are afraid to be questioned.

Connected or Disconnected

Poor service can definitely disconnect a student but when do we know when poor service is prevalent? Some students wear their stress and frustration under their facial mask.

Intelligent Heart

Though intelligence is about learning information, it is also caring about the student's well being.

Intelligence

It im impiortnat for teachers to realize that intelligence is not just from imformation learned in books. Although this information, is also very important.

The Whole Picture

In order to educate students, the students need to feel welcome and comfortable in their surroundings. They need to know that the school, staff and faculty like them as individuals. They also need to know their are rules that need to be followed.

Retention Goals

I utilize the MENTOr theory in my classes. I believe it is important for students to know what my expectations are, and that I follow the same rules. I also want my students to know I care about them, and their progress.

Working Students

Allowing graduates to be a part of Career Services workshop gives students an insight on whats to come post education. Understanding the hurdles and competition allows them to prepare early for their career and the drive to complete their program becomes greater.

Student Involvement

We recently added student organizations this has already proven to be a great step towards retention, student & faculty bonding and individual responibiltiy. The students now take pride in their attendance and grades, and have increased school spirit.

Bridging the Gap

What methods have been used to help ease the transition of student expectations when starting school?

Total Team Effort - The Village

Retention must start from the begining with every staff member on board throughout the student completion. Engaging, encouraging and inspiring them past the graduation. "It takes a village to raise a child", this rings true and loud in the education industry, especially in regards to retention. What do you think?

first week

if a student is unresponsive to our attempt to reach out to them, what can we do to hlep them to come back to school and what is it that can be don specifically to meet each individuls needs?

What to except

I would like to know if you have any student focused ideas or games to have at orientation that can be started and then completed on the first few days of class. Ways in which to inusre that we have a strong start...

Orientation

I would like to know what is the best atmosphere to have duing orientation to not just excite the studnet but also to set them up for success and let them know what it is to undetstand what type of education they are signing up for, without loosing their intrest.
