Ongoing Orientations

Since our program is so long with little regular departmental interaction with students, do you find a benefit in giving some type of orientation, on day one of your class, that re-affirms the student’s goals & where help can be found? If so, how do you present it?

The Value Equation

Consider the value equation (retention = perceived value/cost). Other than tuition, what are the 3 most common costs that your students say they have? What perceived values do you help them understand that helps them to offset those costs?

The problem of a split curriculum

I have the problem of having a former six week class split in to 2 three week classes with no consideration of the instruction. The class and course was designed to be taught as straight six weeks. Now with students entering every 3 weeks into a new class, the introduction must be redone and this leads to the continuing students seeing the same thing over again. Topics have to have clear stopping timesto meet the requirements of the departing students and we cannot start the next phase until the next class has started.

First week, the right place at the right time!

It is very important to ensure that the student feels comfortable in their surroundings at this time in their lives. Making them feel welcome, assisting with job searches, living arrangements, school professionalism expectations, first course syllabus, testing requirements, class times, issuing books are all EQUALLY important to making them feel that they are in the right place at the right time.

Add Music

During the orientation week , when students are working in groups, put on some proper music to calm them down. Scott Humphrey.

Student text book

Student text books should be used as a supplement to class room instruction. Text books contain extra information that will enhance a student's learning experience and therefore text book classroom and/or homework assignments can be beneficial.

admissions process

The overall quality of the admissions process is a great start to effectuating retention.

intro

I find it hard sometimes to brag myself up , I am a very modest person , sometimes I feel I didnt give them enought information about myself.

Enroll the right students

The first step is to enroll people that have PASSION for the field that they will be learning! You can only keep a student engaged if they want to be there.

Interactions

Even though we have little participation at the orientation at our technical school we provide the student with the needed information during their training for perfomance, attitude, interactions with each other and later after they graduate to network with each other to better help them selves and their customers as they progress through out classes.

Retention

How do we improve or maintain student retention without having the proper resources to provide students

Late enrollments

It is verey important to spend some one one on one time with a student that may have missed the first day.

Humanizing yourself as an instructor.

I have found that a funny "mess-up" story about something I have done helps the students see that I am human and therefore, not scary.

Keeping enrollment after the student starts

It is very true that actually getting the enrolled students to start the program is difficult and perhaps "iffy" is appropriate. However, once in we always go the extra mile to ensure they are comfortable and confident that their decision has been the correct one. As this is a technical school, getting them into the "core of the program" or "meat and potato's" of the course as quickly as possible helps them see that they can do this! Once that realization happens, they are eager to come to school and learn more.

Student Involement in Retention

Our instituition is lock step. Faculty have a great deal of influence over retention. Another group not mention is a student's peers. What about group assignments, with fixed groups (that rotate over time) with students enhancing a peer's attendance (through phone calls if needed) as well as with one's peers' enthusiasm?

Monitoring!

why is monitoring is so important?
