Students re-taking a class

Many times I have students that didn't finished a class, but already know the material from their previous time, sometimes I find them to be bored and not engaged in the class, What can I do to keep them engage and interested?

Qualifacations of the Instructor

I do think this is very important at the beginning of the class, (depending on the school)in our Technical school at the beginning of every class each Instructor gives a 2-3 minute presentation of there experience in the feild and in the subject their teaching. This gives the students a good sense of feeling that there instructor has the back ground for teaching this subject, this also lets the student know that the school is hiring instructors that can teach them about the feilds they our going into.

INTERVENTION SUPPORT

Our institution has no mechanism to help instructors know when to refer a student to an "expert." How do we know when the situation is beyond our capabilities?

SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS

I think all instructors run across students who are simply incapable of learning the material being taught. How do we deal with a student who just cannot learn what we are teaching? How do we keep that student's outlook positive? How do we avoid the stress that is bound to occur?

our business is changing lives one at a time.

I take each student one add a time to try and so them how thing will be in real life explain to them all the ups and downs show them how to manage any situation that can come thier way and solve it.

unsure student

I teach at a technical school and one of my students has uproached me that he is just not sure he wants to learn this as a profession. I advised him that something interested him enough to sign up and start school in the first place. He does seem to be very interested in class but he is just wondering if it is right for him.Do any of you have any suggestions on how else i could try to advise him.If he realy doesn,t want to do this than he probably shouldn,t.

Coping

Many first time college students are young and inexperienced in dealing with problems. They don’t have sufficient coping skills to deal with issues that can arise. Many are used to a parent handling these issues and some have had no support whatsoever. With proper support and guidance these students can be guided to the right path.

The First Day in the Classroom

At my School we meet and great our students at the door every day. I like this because it gives me an opportunity to talk to every student. A lot of times I can get a good read on the student’s mood and demeanor. If the student is not his/her normal self it gives me an opportunity to see if I can help with anything or direct them to the proper person who can help. On the first day of class I will cover the course syllabus and let the students know what they can expect in the class and how I will grade them. I will reinforce these expectations at the beginning and again when the assignment is given.

Students added to an existing class.

I often have students added to a class that has been together for a previous class. It can be hard to get these returning students into an already established group. They often feel like they are on the outside looking in.Is it best to asighn them a group or let them network and find their own place ?

Retention

This is an ongoing issue for all career schools.

Intervention

All students are different. Some will welcome help & other will resist. It's importaint not to get too much in the personal business of others.

Stress

Stress is a killer. It can cause all kinds of health problems in our indusrty.

retention

This is everyones job, in the whole sch!ool

Improving Retention

I really feel that reaching out to students is critical in making them feel as if they are a very important aspect to what we do. It does work both ways. It seems that even with meetings, or pep talks, it is really never enough.

Intervention

I agree that most students never tell you about a problem that has swayed them to drop from a program. Is is alright to ask a student if they have a problem or if there is anyway to help?

Retention

I feel if students are not pushed, sometimes with very positive feedback, they feel as if they may not have what it takes to perform in a future class.

Retention

I seems as though a lot of students have so many issues with staying in school. I see more students dealing with financial problems or they just become disenchanted with a program.

Students in control

I agree with Enrique...let the students have the powe...In a controled enviroment (of course)

Counsling

It would be helpful if we as faculty were offered courses in crisis management as we are the ones directly dealing with students in crisis.

Orientation

The first day of class I always introduce myself, and inform them of my background, then I asked them to introcuce themselves, tell me what elective they are taking, where they are from, and what they expect from the school...
